Design in India - Getting Ready for the Future

The University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) launched its Design Conclave 'Design in India - Getting Ready for the Future' on 2nd June, 2017 at Vivanta by Taj - Ambassador, New Delhi. Utpal Ghosh, CEO & President, UPES in his opening address said that the University is an amalgamation of well qualified faculties, infrastructure and discipline. With the increasing focus on innovation and creativity and exemplary vision on the future of Design, UPES established the School of Design Studies (SoDS). This is the first design school in Uttarakhand offering UG and PG programs in Transportation Design, Industrial Design, Digital Design and Interaction Design. 

Anil Saini, Director (Design), General Motors Technical Center India in his Visionary Keynote address took everyone to the history of Design education in India. He explained the concept behind the Design Policy of India. 'Design Thinking' has emerged as an essential strategy for achieving innovation and business growth in the 21st century. Moreover, it offers immense scope as a tool to solve complex urban and social challenges in a country like India.

In his Academic Keynote address Dr. Darlie O Koshy, Director General & CEO of Institute of Apparel Management & ATDC pointed to the need of quality Design Education in India. Innovations can't be accidents. It deserves in-depth knowledge and skill levels. I believe in design democracy. When allowing for numerous people to participate in a design, it becomes a process that caters to all sections of society and is no longer relegated to high-end elitist designers. He urged the design educators and experts in the audience to demand for the next edition of Design Policy from the government. It's time to update the Indian Design policy as lot many new things have come into design practices of the day.

Butool Abbas, Co-Founder of Thinking Threads Design spoke on Liberating Creativity through Education. The Panel Discussion on the Role of Design in Business Growth was moderated by Saurabh Singh, Dy General Manager, Design Studio, Maruti Suzuki India. Ajay Gupta, Founder Director, First Touch Solutions, Anupama Bhat, Co-Founder, Design Lead, Kriya Studio, Chetan Sorabh, Team Head, Industrial Design, LG Electronics India, Satish Komaragiri, Founder Dirctor, Advandes Design Engineering Services and Sudhir Kumar, Director & Industrial Designer, SKM Designs participated in the discussions. The panel was clear on the need of quality design interventions for better business growth. And they said that the new generation business groups have already aligned to this need. 

Krithika Mani, a class V student from Pathways School in Gurgaon presented her innovative prototype of a Multi-Purpose Walking Stick. She explained the way she got inspired and developed this innovative product for her Grandma! The need of Design Education from the School levels will really help the young generation to walk more to their desired career destinations.

Anuj Prasad, Founder & CEO of Desmania Design came up with an interesting session on Intensive Immersion - Design a Template for Public Space Anchor. The Conclave participants were divided into eight groups and asked to brainstorm and work on a plan for better Public Parking solutions. 

Dr. S. Ghosal, Professor & Director, School of Design Studies, UPES in his concluding address said that UPES has been the pioneer in India and Asia in domain specific education targeting core sectors. The model has been appreciated and acknowledged by the industry as there is an increasing demand for industry ready professionals who could be productive from day one. School of Design Studies of UPES is one such initiative aimed at training professionals for the emerging creative economy.
