Facebook launches Signal: A news gathering tool for journalists

Social networking giant Facebook has launched a new tool to help journalists discover, organize and publish trending news content found on its extensive network. Called as Signal, which is available for both Facebook and Instagram, helps journalists source, gather and embed newsworthy content across news, culture, entertainment, sports and other in one place.

The tool allows journalists to monitor the trending news on Facebook and then quickly display related content that has been shared publicly from both people and pages for deeper context. They can also access lists of public figures ranked by who is being mentioned the most on Facebook.

The tool is said to be free for journalist, making their work a little bit easier than before. ‘‘We have heard from journalists that they want an easy way to make Facebook a more vital part of their news gathering with the ability to surface relevant trends, photos, videos and posts on Facebook and Instagram for use in their storytelling and reporting.’’ Andy Mitchell, Director of Media Partnership at Facebook wrote in a blog post.

Signal is simply the newest of Facebook’s attempt to involve itself with the journalist and media publications which have discovered success attracting enormous viewers by way of the social community.
