OpenAI has named Prabhjeet Singh, currently President of Uber India and South Asia, as its Managing Director for India. Singh will take charge in September, reporting to Asia Pacific MD Kiran Mani, with a mandate to expand partnerships, strengthen regulatory engagement, and accelerate AI adoption across businesses and institutions.

OpenAI has announced the appointment of Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, as its Managing Director for India, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion into one of the world’s fastest-growing technology markets. Singh, who will assume his new role in September, will report directly to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific.

Singh’s remit will encompass leading OpenAI’s consumer and enterprise business in India, forging strategic partnerships, overseeing regulatory engagement, and managing overall operations. The company emphasised that his appointment reflects its commitment to supporting India’s burgeoning AI ecosystem and accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence across businesses, institutions, and the public sector.

OpenAI’s decision to bring Singh on board comes at a time when India is positioning itself as a global hub for digital innovation and AI-driven transformation. With a strong background in scaling operations and navigating complex regulatory landscapes, Singh is expected to play a pivotal role in aligning OpenAI’s global ambitions with India’s dynamic market environment.

During his tenure at Uber, Singh was instrumental in strengthening the company’s presence in India and South Asia, driving growth strategies, and building partnerships that enhanced Uber’s integration into local economies. His experience in managing large-scale consumer platforms and working closely with government stakeholders is seen as a valuable asset as OpenAI seeks to deepen its engagement in India.

OpenAI highlighted that Singh’s leadership will be crucial in expanding collaborations with enterprises and institutions, fostering innovation, and ensuring that AI technologies are deployed responsibly and inclusively. The company also underscored its intention to work closely with policymakers to shape frameworks that balance innovation with ethical safeguards.

India’s AI landscape has witnessed rapid growth, with increasing adoption across sectors such as healthcare, education, finance, and manufacturing. Singh’s appointment signals OpenAI’s recognition of India’s strategic importance in the global AI ecosystem and its ambition to contribute meaningfully to the country’s digital transformation journey.
