When tensions rose across the region, Starbucks chose to respond not with a product push but with a message of reassurance. Partnering with IMPACT BBDO, the brand sought to highlight unity in the UAE, a country defined by its diversity. Rather than inventing a new symbol, the agency turned to one of Starbucks’ most familiar gestures: the handwritten names on its cups.
For Starbucks, inclusivity has long been central to its identity. In the UAE, baristas write names from over 200 nationalities daily, each in a different script and style. This unscripted act of recognition became the foundation of a campaign designed to show that togetherness is not a slogan but a lived reality, repeated thousands of times across the country.
The result was “Originals. Stronger Together,” a large-scale out-of-home takeover on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai. The billboard was built as a mosaic of real Starbucks cups, each photographed with a genuinely different handwritten name. Different hands, different scripts, and different identities came together around a central panel carrying the Starbucks logo and the campaign line in both English and Arabic.
The choice of real imagery was deliberate. By using authentic customer cups rather than stock visuals, the campaign underscored Starbucks’ values of openness and welcome. The mosaic structure gave physical form to the idea of unity, turning a simple act into a powerful national message.
Beyond the billboard, the activation extended into social media. The outdoor installation became shareable content, encouraging people to reflect on their own names, their own cups, and their place in the UAE’s collective story. The campaign deliberately targeted the general public rather than specific demographics, ensuring that commuters, metro riders, and residents of all backgrounds felt included.
Satyen Adhikari, Senior Creative Director at IMPACT BBDO, explained: “Sometimes the best solve for a brief is the most simple. When Starbucks asked us for a campaign that celebrated the plurality of the UAE we knew the answer straight away. Names on cups, that’s it.”
Running for six weeks, the placement was estimated to reach between 700,000 and 750,000 cars per day. More than just an advertisement, it became a visible reminder of the everyday gestures of recognition that bind people together, showing that even in moments of uncertainty, unity can be found in the simplest acts.
