Veteran perfumer Sourjya Mohanty has launched Aurrelis, a Mumbai-based fragrance house focused on creating scents tailored to Indian skin and climate. Drawing on more than two decades of professional experience and international training, Mohanty aims to blend global perfumery expertise with ingredients and preferences rooted in regional traditions.
Mumbai’s growing luxury and beauty sector has welcomed a new entrant with the launch of Aurrelis, a fragrance house founded by perfumer Sourjya Mohanty, who will lead the company as Founder and Chief Perfumer.
The new venture marks the culmination of more than two decades of professional experience for Mohanty, whose career has taken an unconventional path from finance to the highly specialised world of fragrance creation. A Chartered Accountant by qualification, he later pursued formal training in perfumery at SDA Bocconi in Italy, establishing a foundation that would shape a career spanning Europe and the Middle East.
Over the past 15 years, Mohanty has worked extensively in perfumery, developing expertise across a broad spectrum of scent creation. His experience encompasses fine fragrance composition as well as the use of traditional Middle Eastern ingredients and techniques, including oud, attars, amber, saffron and rose. These materials, long associated with some of the world’s most enduring perfume traditions, have become a significant part of his professional repertoire.
With Aurrelis, Mohanty is seeking to bring that international perspective to an Indian context. The Mumbai-based fragrance house has been established with a clear focus on creating scents that are better suited to Indian skin and climatic conditions, addressing factors that can influence the way fragrances perform in different environments.
India’s fragrance market has witnessed increasing consumer interest in recent years, with growing demand for both global luxury brands and locally developed scent collections. Within this evolving landscape, Aurrelis aims to occupy a distinct position by combining international perfumery expertise with an understanding of regional preferences and environmental realities.
Mohanty’s background places him at the intersection of several fragrance traditions. His experience in Europe exposed him to contemporary fine fragrance development, while his work in the Middle East provided deep familiarity with ingredients and scent profiles that have gained increasing popularity among consumers worldwide. The combination of these influences is expected to inform the creative direction of Aurrelis.
Industry observers have noted a broader shift towards fragrances designed for specific markets rather than universal formulations. Factors such as temperature, humidity and skin chemistry can affect how a perfume develops and lasts throughout the day. By focusing specifically on Indian conditions, Aurrelis is positioning itself within a growing segment that prioritises local relevance alongside global standards of craftsmanship.
For Mohanty, the launch represents both a professional milestone and an opportunity to contribute to the development of India’s fragrance industry. Drawing upon years of international training and practice, he is setting out to build a brand that reflects a blend of technical expertise, artistic expression and cultural understanding.
As Aurrelis begins operations from Mumbai, the company enters a competitive but expanding market, carrying with it the vision of a founder whose journey from chartered accountancy to perfumery has been shaped by global experience and a belief that fragrance creation can be tailored to the distinctive characteristics of its audience.
