NYMPHS: DELFINA PIGNATIELLO’S SUBMERGED VISION

Argentine photographer Delfina Pignatiello’s underwater series Nymphs captures synchronised swimmers in a pool using breath-hold immersion and carefully orchestrated lighting. Shortlisted in the Sport category of the 2026 Sony World Photography Awards Professional competition, the work transforms athletic discipline into ethereal imagery, merging performance, endurance and artistry beneath the water’s surface.

In the world of sports photography, moments of triumph are often frozen above ground: the sprint to the finish line, the leap for a goal, the roar of a crowd. Delfina Pignatiello, however, chose to look beneath the surface. Her series Nymphs was conceived and executed underwater, a photographic exploration of synchronised swimming that reimagines athleticism as a form of submerged theatre. Shot in a swimming pool with a camera encased in waterproof housing, the project demanded both technical precision and creative daring.

Lighting was central to the series’ impact. Pignatiello positioned lights outside the water, creating a dual effect of front and back illumination. This interplay of brightness and shadow lent the images a sculptural quality, highlighting the contours of the swimmers’ bodies while casting an otherworldly glow across the pool. The result was a visual language that blurred the line between sport and spectacle, transforming the athletes into figures of myth and dream.

The swimmers themselves, national synchronised athletes, were captured through breath-hold immersion. Each image required them to suspend movement and breath beneath the surface, a feat of endurance that mirrored the discipline of their sport. Their poses, choreographed yet fluid, evoked both strength and vulnerability. In Pignatiello’s lens, the athletes became nymph-like presences, suspended in a liminal space where gravity and water conspired to reshape human form.

Recognition of the series came at the 2026 Sony World Photography Awards, where Nymphs was shortlisted in the Professional competition’s Sport category, now known as the Series competition. The accolade placed Pignatiello’s work alongside global entries that celebrate the intersection of athletic achievement and artistic vision. For Argentina, her success underscored the country’s growing presence in international photography, while for Pignatiello it marked a significant step in her career, affirming her ability to merge technical mastery with conceptual depth.

What distinguishes Nymphs is its refusal to treat sport as mere performance. Instead, it interrogates the aesthetics of movement, the relationship between body and environment, and the unseen labour of athletes who train to master both breath and rhythm. The underwater setting becomes more than a backdrop; it is a collaborator, shaping the images with currents, reflections and distortions. In this submerged world, synchronised swimming is not simply a discipline but a metaphor for resilience, grace and the human capacity to adapt.

Ultimately, Pignatiello’s series invites viewers to reconsider the boundaries of sports photography. By immersing her camera and her subjects, she reveals a dimension of athleticism rarely seen, one that is intimate, dreamlike and profoundly human. Nymphs is not just a record of synchronised swimmers in motion; it is a meditation on endurance, artistry and the beauty of bodies suspended between breath and water.
