MCLAREN REVIVES SPIRIT OF THE M6GT AT MONTEREY

At Monterey Car Week 2026, McLaren unveiled the McL 6GT Concept, a modern homage to Bruce McLaren’s unfinished M6GT project of 1969. The design, led by Chief Design Officer Kemal Curić, embodies reduction, clarity and tactility, signalling a new creative phase for McLaren while exploring the philosophy behind future design.

McLaren has chosen the stage of Monterey Car Week 2026 to unveil the McL 6GT Concept, a car that bridges past ambition with present vision. Inspired by Bruce McLaren’s unfinished M6GT project of 1969, the concept is less a literal revival than a philosophical statement, reflecting the brand’s evolving design ethos under Chief Design Officer Kemal Curić.

The timing of the reveal is significant. McLaren has recently undergone months of restructuring, and the 6GT arrives as the first tangible expression of a new creative chapter. Yet it is not intended as a direct preview of future production models. Instead, it serves as a manifesto of Curić’s design thinking—an emphasis on reduction, clarity, tactility and the intimate bond between driver and machine.

At Pebble Beach, Chapter met Curić to discuss the making of the 6GT and the ideas that shaped it. He spoke of the enduring importance of clay modelling in an era dominated by virtual and augmented reality. For him, clay remains a tactile medium that allows designers to feel the surfaces and proportions in ways digital tools cannot replicate. This insistence on physicality underscores his belief that design must be experienced as much as imagined.

Curić also drew parallels between automotive interiors and watchmaking. Precision, craftsmanship and the interplay of mechanical detail inspire his approach to cabin design. The 6GT’s interior reflects this influence, with a focus on material honesty and a celebration of the connection between human and machine. It is a philosophy that seeks to elevate driving from a functional act to a sensory experience.

The McL 6GT Concept is therefore more than a showpiece. It is a statement of intent, articulating what McLaren design should stand for in the years ahead. By revisiting Bruce McLaren’s unfinished dream, the company acknowledges its heritage while charting a course towards a future defined not by excess but by clarity and purpose.

For enthusiasts and industry observers, the 6GT embodies both nostalgia and renewal. It honours a chapter of McLaren’s history while signalling the creative direction of its next era. In doing so, it reminds the automotive world that design is not merely about form or function, but about the enduring dialogue between past vision and future possibility.
