VML South Africa has promoted art director Fumani Khumalo and copywriter Zinhle Mbatha to creative director roles, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing in-house talent. Leadership praised their craft, clarity, and ability to inspire teams, highlighting the growing importance of emotionally intelligent, business-savvy creative leadership in today’s industry.

VML South Africa has strengthened its creative leadership ranks by promoting two of its own, elevating art director Fumani Khumalo and copywriter Zinhle Mbatha to the roles of creative directors in a move that underscores the agency’s commitment to cultivating talent from within.

The appointments, described internally as long overdue, signal a deliberate investment in leadership that blends creative excellence with strategic thinking. Both Khumalo and Mbatha have built reputations within the agency for producing work that is not only visually and verbally compelling but also commercially effective, resonating with audiences while addressing business objectives.

According to Nhlanhla Ngcobo, executive creative director at the agency, the promotions reflect years of consistent performance and a distinctive approach to problem-solving. He emphasised that the pair’s work has stood out for its clarity of thought and ability to transform ambiguity into ideas that are sharp, memorable and impactful.

Ngcobo noted that their leadership instincts have already been evident in how teams respond to their direction. He pointed to their capacity to balance grounded thinking with ambition, a combination that has made them influential figures on some of the agency’s most prolific and award-winning accounts. Their promotion, he suggested, formalises a role they have effectively been playing for some time.

The tone of the announcement also highlighted a broader shift in expectations of creative leadership. In an industry where the boundaries between creativity and business strategy are increasingly blurred, Ngcobo argued that today’s leaders must bring more than technical skill. Emotional intelligence, relationship-building, decisiveness and the ability to solve complex business challenges creatively are now essential attributes.

He expressed confidence that Khumalo and Mbatha embody these qualities, describing them as a “dynamic duo” whose leadership will encourage teams to challenge convention and move beyond predictable approaches. In a characteristically vivid turn of phrase, he suggested they would inspire colleagues to “wave multi-coloured middle fingers” at the pedestrian norms of the industry and instead embrace bold, unconventional thinking.

The internal promotions also reflect a wider trend across global agencies to prioritise talent retention and development amid a competitive creative landscape. By elevating individuals who have grown within the organisation, agencies like VML South Africa aim to preserve institutional knowledge while fostering a culture of loyalty and progression.

For Khumalo and Mbatha, the new roles bring both recognition and responsibility. As creative directors, they will be tasked not only with shaping campaigns but also with mentoring teams, setting creative direction and ensuring that ideas align with broader client strategies. Their challenge will be to maintain the high standards that earned them the promotion while scaling their influence across a wider portfolio of work.

Ngcobo’s closing remarks underscored the significance of the moment, describing the promotions as earned, overdue and indicative of the kind of leadership the agency intends to champion. His pride in their achievements was evident, as was his anticipation of the impact they will have in their new positions.

As the advertising industry continues to evolve, the rise of leaders like Khumalo and Mbatha suggests a future in which creativity is not only about originality but also about relevance, empathy and strategic impact. Their ascent marks both a personal milestone and a statement of intent from VML South Africa about the kind of creative leadership it believes will define the next chapter of the business.
