Former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has been appointed National President of the Aeronautical Society of India. Emphasising legacy and collaboration, he aims to strengthen links across research, industry, academia and students, fostering innovation and building a connected aerospace ecosystem aligned with India’s national priorities and future ambitions.
A new leadership chapter has opened at the Aeronautical Society of India with the appointment of former Indian Space Research Organisation chief S. Somanath as its National President, signalling renewed momentum for India’s aerospace ambitions.
Stepping into the role, Somanath acknowledged the formidable legacy shaped by pioneers such as A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and Satish Dhawan, whose leadership laid the foundation of India’s space and aeronautical journey. He expressed a clear intent to build on this heritage, positioning AeSI as a catalyst for the next phase of technological advancement.
Drawing from decades of experience within ISRO, Somanath underscored the importance of collective vision in achieving large-scale innovation. His approach reflects a shift towards deeper collaboration, where breakthroughs are driven not in silos but through partnerships spanning research laboratories, public sector undertakings, private industry, academia and student communities.
Central to his roadmap is the creation of a more integrated aerospace ecosystem—one that not only accelerates research and development but also nurtures talent and inspires the next generation of engineers and scientists. By bridging institutional gaps, AeSI aims to become a dynamic platform that aligns innovation with India’s broader national priorities, including self-reliance and technological leadership.
The transition also brings with it a refreshed leadership structure, including vice presidents, governing council members and mentors, all tasked with strengthening the society’s outreach and impact. Under Somanath’s stewardship, AeSI is expected to expand its role as a convening force—bringing together diverse stakeholders to shape the future of India’s aerospace sector.
As the organisation looks ahead, the emphasis is firmly on continuity and change: honouring the vision of its past while embracing the demands of a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
