Indians Anand RK and Suparna Sharma, with Bloomberg News, have won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Illustrated Reporting and Commentary for trAPPed. The graphic novel depicts a neurologist in India trapped in “digital arrest,” exposing the psychological toll of online fraud and placing Indian storytelling at the forefront of global journalism.

Bloomberg News, alongside Indian creators Anand RK and Suparna Sharma, has won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Illustrated Reporting and Commentary for trAPPed, a graphic novel that has brought Indian storytelling to the global stage. The work is a chilling deep-dive into the ordeal of a neurologist in India held captive by her own phone, trapped in what is now known as “digital arrest.” For eight days, she endured relentless surveillance and psychological manipulation, exposing the devastating impact of online fraud and the sophisticated traps used by digital scammers.

Anand RK, a Mumbai-based artist acclaimed for graphic novels such as Blue in Green and Grafity’s Wall, brought the story to life visually with haunting illustrations that capture the claustrophobic reality of digital confinement. Suparna Sharma, a Delhi-based freelance journalist, anchored the reporting with Pearson, Bloomberg’s senior investigative reporter for Asia and a former India correspondent. Together, they crafted a piece that blends investigative rigour with artistic depth, making the invisible terror of digital exploitation both visceral and immediate.

The Pulitzer Prize, regarded as one of the highest honours in global journalism, has rarely spotlighted illustrated reporting. By awarding trAPPed, the jury has validated the power of visual storytelling in addressing complex contemporary issues. The recognition places Indian creativity at the forefront of innovative journalism, underscoring how local experiences can resonate globally when framed with authenticity and artistry.

At its core, trAPPed is more than a story of one victim; it is a warning about the fragility of trust in digital systems. The phenomenon of “digital arrest” has become a growing menace in India, where scammers impersonate authorities to coerce victims into compliance. The psychological toll is immense, leaving individuals traumatised long after the ordeal ends. By focusing on a neurologist’s ordeal, the graphic novel humanises a widespread issue, turning statistics into lived experience and amplifying the urgency of addressing digital fraud.

Bloomberg’s collaboration with Indian talent highlights the global nature of investigative storytelling today. Anand RK’s artistry and Suparna Sharma’s reporting have not only elevated the narrative but also demonstrated the strength of India’s creative community in shaping international journalism. Their success is a testament to the country’s growing influence in the creative economy, where innovation and cultural resonance converge to produce work of lasting impact.

The Pulitzer recognition of trAPPed is both a milestone and a message: journalism must evolve to confront the challenges of the digital age, and illustrated reporting is no longer peripheral but central to that mission. For Anand RK and Suparna Sharma, the honour is a celebration of Indian creativity on the world stage. For journalism, it is a reminder that truth can be told in many forms—and sometimes, the most powerful is drawn.
