A RETURN TO RED: XFACTA REINVIGORATES COW & GATE

Cow & Gate has unveiled a renewed identity by Xfacta, reclaiming its historic red to strengthen recognition and unify its portfolio. The redesign introduces a refined wordmark, a heart-shaped ampersand symbolising care, and Bobo the Bear to guide parents through feeding stages, combining heritage with modern clarity and warmth.

Cow & Gate, one of Britain’s most familiar baby nutrition brands, has unveiled a striking new identity created by international agency Xfacta. The redesign restores the brand’s historic association with red, a colour long embedded in parental memory, while introducing a modern system that unifies its extensive portfolio and strengthens recognition in a competitive category.

For generations, Cow & Gate has been trusted by families, yet its packaging had drifted towards green in an effort to signal naturality. Research revealed that this shift diluted one of its most distinctive assets without establishing a clear alternative. Parents, though familiar with the name, struggled to articulate what made Cow & Gate unique. Danone, the brand’s owner, initially sought a packaging refresh, but the project evolved into a comprehensive reappraisal of its identity.

Xfacta’s solution centred on reclaiming red as a structural component of the brand. A richer, more assured shade now anchors packaging across 64 Formula and First Diets SKUs, creating a recognisable masterbrand block. White space and supporting colours bring clarity, while stage-specific cues aid navigation. The Cow & Gate wordmark has been refined for modern versatility, with subtle adjustments to spacing and stroke weight. Most notably, the ampersand has been reimagined as both a heart and a parent cradling a baby, transforming a familiar typographic element into a powerful symbol of care and connection.

Warmth and storytelling are introduced through Bobo the Bear, a character designed to grow with the child across four developmental stages. From newborn to toddler, Bobo evolves in posture and activity, supported by storybook details that add personality and progression. The Bear not only provides emotional resonance but also practical guidance, helping parents navigate feeding stages with continuity and reassurance.

Typography plays a crucial role in balancing warmth with utility. Gelica lends approachability to prominent messages, while Aktiv Grotesk Condensed ensures functional information is communicated clearly. The system creates a predictable reading sequence, reducing visual competition and making complex nutritional information easier to absorb. This clarity is vital in a category where parental confidence is paramount.

Independent consumer testing confirmed the effectiveness of the redesign, with significant improvements in brand recognition, perceptions of quality and overall appeal. Against category competition, Cow & Gate’s renewed identity performed strongly, reinforcing its heritage while meeting the expectations of modern parenting.

By restoring red, refining its wordmark, and introducing symbols of care and progression, Cow & Gate has reconnected with the equity it built over generations. The new identity creates one recognisable family across every stage, format and feed, ensuring the brand remains trusted, distinctive and relevant in today’s marketplace.
