BUGATTI RETIRES W16 WITH FINAL MISTRAL

Bugatti has completed the 99th and final W16 Mistral, marking the retirement of its legendary 8.0‑litre quad‑turbocharged engine. Named “The Last of Its Kind,” the bespoke roadster honours nearly two decades of hypercar dominance, bowing out as the world’s fastest open‑top production car before Bugatti begins a new hybrid V16 era.  

Bugatti has drawn the curtain on one of the most celebrated chapters in automotive history with the retirement of its legendary W16 engine. The milestone was marked by the completion of the 99th and final W16 Mistral, a bespoke creation named “The Last of Its Kind,” which symbolises both the end of an era and the beginning of a new one.  

Finished in a striking Pearl and Sparkle exterior paired with a Magnolia leather interior, the final Mistral pays tribute to the engine that defined Bugatti’s modern renaissance. Since its introduction in the Veyron in 2005, the 8.0‑litre quad‑turbocharged W16 produced up to 1,600 PS and consistently redefined the boundaries of performance, luxury and engineering. It powered the Veyron, Chiron and Mistral, each of which became icons in their own right.  

The W16 Mistral also leaves behind a record that will stand as a testament to its engineering brilliance. In its final flourish, the roadster achieved a staggering 453.91 km/h (282.04 mph), securing its place as the fastest open‑top production car in the world. This achievement underscores the W16’s role in rewriting the hypercar rulebook and setting benchmarks that competitors could only aspire to match.  

For nearly two decades, the W16 embodied Bugatti’s philosophy of combining artistry with mechanical audacity. It was more than an engine; it was a symbol of ambition, precision and the relentless pursuit of speed. Its retirement is not simply the end of a mechanical era but the closing of a cultural chapter that elevated Bugatti to the pinnacle of automotive excellence.  

Yet as one story concludes, another begins. Bugatti now turns its attention to the Tourbillon, a new flagship powered by an 8.3‑litre naturally aspirated V16 hybrid producing 1,800 hp. This bold step into electrified performance signals the marque’s commitment to innovation while preserving the grandeur of its engineering heritage.  

“The Last of Its Kind” is both a farewell and a promise. It honours the W16’s unmatched legacy while heralding the dawn of Bugatti’s next great adventure. One era ends. Another begins.
