Kerala is preparing to welcome visitors from around the world as the state’s week-long Onam Tourism Week Celebrations begin on August 24 and continue until August 30. Blending tradition, culture and hospitality, the festival promises vibrant experiences that reinforce Kerala’s reputation as ‘God’s Own Country’.

As the monsoon gradually gives way to brighter skies, Kerala is preparing for one of its most cherished and colourful festivals. From August 24 to August 30, the state will come alive with the week-long Onam Tourism Week Celebrations, inviting residents and travellers alike to experience the rich cultural heritage that has earned Kerala its global identity as ‘God’s Own Country’.

Onam is much more than a harvest festival. It is a celebration of unity, prosperity and tradition, rooted in the legendary return of King Mahabali, whose annual homecoming is believed to bring joy and abundance to the land. Every year, the festival transforms Kerala into a vibrant stage where age-old customs blend seamlessly with contemporary tourism experiences.

The Tourism Week celebrations will be organised across the state, showcasing Kerala’s remarkable diversity. Cities, towns and villages will host cultural performances, folk arts, traditional music and dance, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the state’s living traditions. Public spaces are expected to be decorated with colourful floral carpets, known as pookkalam, while homes will welcome guests with the warmth and hospitality that have become synonymous with Kerala.

For domestic and international tourists, Onam presents an opportunity to witness the state’s culture at its finest. Traditional games, community feasts and artistic performances create a festive atmosphere that extends well beyond the boundaries of individual celebrations. The iconic Onasadya, a lavish vegetarian feast served on banana leaves, remains one of the festival’s greatest attractions, reflecting Kerala’s culinary richness and spirit of togetherness.

Tourism authorities view the annual celebrations as an important platform to promote Kerala’s cultural identity alongside its renowned natural attractions. While the state’s backwaters, beaches, hill stations and wildlife continue to draw visitors throughout the year, the Onam season offers an immersive cultural experience that distinguishes Kerala from many other travel destinations.

The celebrations also provide a significant boost to local economies. Hotels, homestays, transport operators, artisans, performers and small businesses all benefit from the increased movement of tourists during the festival week. Craftspeople find new audiences for traditional products, while cultural troupes gain opportunities to present performances that have been preserved across generations.

For many Malayalis living outside the state, Onam is also a homecoming. Families reunite, friendships are renewed and communities gather to celebrate shared traditions, creating an atmosphere that resonates with nostalgia and belonging.

As Kerala prepares to welcome thousands of visitors for the Onam Tourism Week Celebrations from August 24 to August 30, the festival once again promises to be a celebration of culture, community and hospitality. In doing so, it reaffirms why Kerala continues to be celebrated around the world as God’s Own Country.
