P.J. George has been named Editorial Director of Malayala Manorama in Kottayam, marking a new chapter in his distinguished career. Since joining the organisation in 1985, he has held senior editorial roles and contributed to its growth, combining newsroom leadership with international exposure through WAN-IFRA summits.

P.J. George has assumed the role of Editorial Director at Malayala Manorama, one of India’s most influential newspapers, headquartered in Kottayam. His appointment reflects both continuity and renewal within the organisation, as he brings decades of editorial experience and institutional knowledge to the helm of its newsroom operations.

George’s association with Malayala Manorama began in 1985, when he joined the organisation and steadily rose through its editorial ranks. His early years were spent in the Kochi unit, where he served as News Editor and later Chief News Editor, overseeing coverage during a period of rapid change in Kerala’s media landscape. His leadership in Kochi was marked by a commitment to rigorous reporting and editorial innovation, qualities that earned him recognition within the organisation.

In 2017, George was appointed Associate Editor in Kottayam, a role that placed him at the heart of the newspaper’s central editorial operations. His responsibilities expanded further in 2024 when he became Senior Associate Editor, consolidating his position as a key figure in shaping the paper’s editorial direction. These successive appointments underscored his ability to balance tradition with modernisation, ensuring Malayala Manorama remained relevant in an evolving media environment.

Beyond his newsroom responsibilities, George has contributed to the organisation’s broader publishing initiatives. He served as editor of the Manorama annual magazine, a flagship publication that reflects the cultural and intellectual currents of Kerala. His stewardship of the magazine demonstrated his versatility as an editor, capable of curating content that resonates with diverse readerships while maintaining high editorial standards.

George’s career has also been marked by international engagement. He participated in the WAN-IFRA Newsroom Summit held in France in 2007 and 2010, representing Malayala Manorama on a global stage. These summits brought together editors and media leaders from across the world to discuss challenges and innovations in journalism. His involvement highlighted his commitment to learning from global best practices and adapting them to the Indian context.

As Editorial Director, George inherits the responsibility of guiding Malayala Manorama at a time when the media industry faces both opportunities and challenges. The rise of digital platforms, shifting reader habits, and the demand for credible journalism require strong editorial leadership. His long association with the organisation, combined with his international exposure, positions him to steer the newspaper through this dynamic landscape.

Malayala Manorama’s decision to appoint George reflects confidence in his ability to uphold the newspaper’s legacy while embracing the future. His career trajectory, from newsroom editor to senior leadership, embodies the values of dedication, adaptability, and editorial excellence. For readers and staff alike, his appointment signals stability and vision, ensuring that the newspaper continues to play a vital role in informing and engaging the public.
