A spectacular multi-day wedding at Shangri-La Hambantota highlights Sri Lanka’s rise as a premier destination for international weddings. Blending scale, culture, and economic impact, such events are driving tourism growth, showcasing local talent, and positioning the island as a high-value global celebration hub.

As Sri Lanka continues its resurgence as one of Asia’s most compelling travel destinations, Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa is emerging as a defining force in positioning the island as a premier hub for international destination weddings, where scale, setting and storytelling seamlessly converge.

This vision came vividly to life in March with the lavish, multi-day wedding celebrations of Mujtaba Shaikhani and Dr. Hafsha, hosted against the dramatic oceanfront backdrop of the resort. Designed as an immersive experience, the celebration unfolded across 21 meticulously curated events, welcoming guests from the United Arab Emirates, India, Pakistan, the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka. Over several days, the southern coastline transformed into a vibrant stage for cultural exchange, festivity and global connection.

The significance of such international gatherings was underscored by the presence of Vijitha Herath, whose attendance highlighted the growing importance of destination weddings within the country’s evolving tourism landscape.

Spread across 58 hectares of lush tropical terrain overlooking the Indian Ocean, Shangri-La Hambantota offers a rare blend of expansive outdoor venues and the infrastructure required to host complex, multi-format celebrations at scale. From sunset ceremonies along the coastline to intricately themed evenings, the resort has demonstrated a level of versatility that sets it apart within the region.

Beyond the spectacle, the impact of such weddings extends deep into the local economy. Large-scale international celebrations activate a wide network of industries, including florists, designers, entertainers, transport providers and small and medium enterprises across the southern region. Each event generates sustained economic activity over several days, supporting livelihoods while showcasing Sri Lanka’s creative and hospitality expertise to a global audience.

The Shaikhani–Hafsha wedding is not an isolated example. Shangri-La Hambantota has been steadily building a portfolio of international destination weddings, with confirmed bookings indicating a doubling of such events this year. This surge signals a strong and encouraging trajectory for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, particularly within the high-value travel segment.

Refhan Razeen, General Manager of Shangri-La Hambantota, noted that hosting celebrations of this scale reflects Sri Lanka’s ability to deliver world-class experiences infused with authenticity and warmth. He emphasised that destination weddings are not only deeply personal milestones but also powerful drivers of tourism, drawing global audiences while creating meaningful opportunities for local communities.

As Sri Lanka continues to redefine its global tourism narrative, the rise of destination weddings offers a compelling pathway for growth. With extended stays, higher per-guest spending and organic global visibility through influential networks, such celebrations are proving to be among the most impactful drivers of the sector.

In this evolving landscape, Shangri-La Hambantota stands at the forefront, shaping a future where grand celebrations do more than create lasting memories—they contribute meaningfully to the nation’s broader tourism story.
