Gage Roads Brew Co. has unveiled a surfboard filled with 10 litres of its Summer Ale ‘Single Fin’, created with Phantom Surfboards shaper Chris Garrett. Tested by Jack Robinson and Brendan Margieson, the board is both surfable and drinkable, blending engineering ingenuity with surf culture in a bold, playful innovation.
Gage Roads Brew Co. has taken the art of brewing and board shaping to an entirely new frontier, unveiling a surfboard that doubles as packaging for its Summer Ale, ‘Single Fin’. In collaboration with legendary shaper Chris Garrett of Phantom Surfboards, the brewery has created a one-of-a-kind board filled with 10 litres of beer, designed to be both surfable and drinkable. The project playfully taps into the surf community’s long-standing debate over whether litres are a meaningful measure for surfboards, stoking conversation with a creation that is as audacious as it is functional.
The board’s maiden voyage was entrusted to Gage Roads part-owner and Olympic surfing medallist Jack Robinson, alongside free surfing icon Brendan ‘Margo’ Margieson. Their test ride was not just a stunt but a statement: that surf culture thrives on experimentation, risk, and the blending of lifestyle with performance. The spectacle of a board carrying beer while carving waves epitomises the brand’s ethos of pushing boundaries and celebrating coastal life.
Engineering such a hybrid was no small feat. Crafting a chamber capable of holding 10 litres of beer while maintaining the integrity of a surfboard required ingenuity and persistence. Sealing the chamber proved challenging, while the addition of pressurisation introduced complications that led to several explosive setbacks during development. Yet perseverance paid off, resulting in a board that functions as both vessel and vehicle. Inspired by the iconic Greenough Spoon design of the 1960s, the chamber was carved to balance performance with practicality, ensuring the beer remained fresh and accessible. A removable tap allows drinkers to pour directly from the board, while an additional valve enables pressurisation to maintain quality.
The innovation is more than a marketing stunt; it is a cultural artefact. By embedding beer within the very fabric of surf culture, Gage Roads has created a product that resonates with the spirit of freedom, camaraderie, and adventure. The Single Fin board is not simply packaging—it is a provocation, a playful challenge to conventions, and a celebration of the surf lifestyle. It embodies the idea that beer is not just consumed but experienced, woven into moments of sun, sea, and shared stories.
For the surf community, the board reignites the debate over measurement, while for the brewing industry, it demonstrates how packaging can transcend utility to become a narrative device. Gage Roads’ experiment blurs the line between product and performance, offering a glimpse into how brands can create experiences that are both memorable and meaningful. Whether viewed as a feat of engineering, a marketing masterstroke, or a cultural statement, the Single Fin surfboard filled with beer is destined to be remembered as one of the most imaginative intersections of sport and brewing.
