TELSTRA’S PLAYFUL PUSH FOR FREE CALLS

Telstra has unveiled its ‘Free For All’ campaign to highlight free calls from payphones across Australia. Created by Bear Meets Eagle On Fire, the colourful rollout features over 30 characters and celebrity cameos, aiming to raise awareness of the service introduced in 2021 and reinforce payphones as vital community lifelines.

Telstra has launched a vibrant new campaign to remind Australians that its payphones offer free local and national calls. Despite the initiative being introduced in 2021, many remain unaware of the service. The ‘Free For All’ campaign, created by Bear Meets Eagle On Fire, aims to change that with a burst of colour and creativity.

Featuring more than 30 quirky characters, the campaign will roll out across 5,000 of Telstra’s 14,000 payphones nationwide. Illustrators Brosmind, Nicko Philips, McBess and Ovcharkart have contributed original designs, while celebrity cameos from Rick & Morty, the Powerpuff Girls, Ren & Stimpy and Squidward add a pop culture twist.

Alita McMenamin, Telstra’s Head of Brand and Marketing Communications, emphasised the importance of payphones as a lifeline for vulnerable communities. “They’re free to use, and for many people they can be critical in moments that matter most,” she said. “We wanted to create a playful campaign to raise awareness and remind Australians our payphones are there for them for free — whether it’s calling for help, staying connected with loved ones, or accessing essential services.”

Micah Walker, Chief Creative Officer at BMEOF, described the campaign as a simple but effective idea. “The unique characters and celebrity cameos make for a bit of fun, as they pop up around the country,” he noted.

By blending humour, art and nostalgia, Telstra’s campaign seeks to ensure Australians know that free calls are just a payphone away — a message delivered with both utility and charm.
