Allied Blenders & Distillers Ltd. has appointed Uday Rao as Marketing Director, bringing nearly three decades of marketing and leadership experience. Rao previously held senior roles at Pernod Ricard India and other major organisations, and is expected to strengthen the company’s marketing strategy and expand its presence in India’s competitive spirits market.

Allied Blenders & Distillers Ltd. has appointed Uday Rao as its new Marketing Director, bringing to the company nearly three decades of experience in brand building, market expansion and strategic marketing leadership across multiple sectors. His appointment marks an important addition to the leadership team of one of India’s leading spirits companies as it seeks to strengthen its marketing capabilities and reinforce its position in a highly competitive and regulated industry.

Rao’s career has been defined by a deep understanding of consumer behaviour, category leadership and pricing strategy, combined with an ability to execute integrated marketing initiatives across diverse markets. Over the years, he has developed a reputation for driving brand growth and shaping market strategies that respond effectively to changing consumer preferences and competitive dynamics.

Before joining Allied Blenders & Distillers, Rao spent more than seven years at Pernod Ricard India, where he held several significant leadership roles. During this period, he served as Marketing Leader for the North Zone and later as Region Business Head for Rajasthan. In these roles, he was responsible for managing key markets and driving the growth of the company’s portfolio, particularly in the premium spirits category.

One of Rao’s notable achievements during his tenure at Pernod Ricard India was his contribution to strengthening the company’s Scotch whisky portfolio. He played a central role in revitalising and repositioning some of the company’s flagship brands, helping them maintain relevance in an increasingly competitive market. Among these was Seagram’s 100 Pipers, which under his leadership achieved a landmark milestone by becoming the first Scotch brand in India to cross one million cases in annual sales.

The milestone reflected both the brand’s enduring popularity and the effectiveness of the marketing strategies implemented during that period. Rao’s work involved carefully balancing brand heritage with contemporary consumer appeal, while also navigating the regulatory complexities that characterise India’s alcohol industry.

Before entering the spirits sector, Rao built a strong and diverse marketing foundation across several other industries, giving him a broad perspective on consumer engagement and brand development. He worked with Vodafone Essar South Ltd., where he gained experience in the fast-evolving telecommunications sector, known for its intense competition and rapid technological change.

His professional journey also includes roles at MetLife India Insurance Co. Pvt. Ltd., where he contributed to marketing initiatives in the financial services sector, and at Wipro GE Medical Systems, where he was involved in marketing within the healthcare technology industry. These experiences exposed him to different market dynamics and regulatory environments, helping shape his strategic approach to brand management and business growth.

Rao’s cross-industry experience has allowed him to develop a versatile marketing skill set that spans consumer goods, services and technology-driven sectors. Such breadth is increasingly valuable in today’s marketing landscape, where brands must navigate complex ecosystems involving digital engagement, data-driven insights and evolving consumer expectations.

His appointment at Allied Blenders & Distillers comes at a time when the company is continuing to build its presence across India’s growing alcoholic beverages market. With rising consumer interest in premium products and a gradual shift in drinking preferences, companies in the sector are placing greater emphasis on brand differentiation, marketing innovation and portfolio development.

Industry observers note that seasoned marketing leadership can play a critical role in shaping how beverage companies connect with consumers while maintaining compliance with regulatory frameworks governing advertising and promotion. Rao’s background in managing brands within such environments positions him well to guide marketing strategies that are both creative and responsible.

At Allied Blenders & Distillers, Rao is expected to focus on strengthening brand equity, expanding market reach and enhancing the company’s integrated marketing capabilities. His experience in managing diverse portfolios and driving strategic initiatives across complex markets is likely to support the company’s ambitions to further consolidate its leadership in the Indian spirits industry.

As the company continues to evolve in a competitive landscape, Rao’s appointment signals a strategic step towards reinforcing its marketing vision and building stronger connections with consumers across the country.
