RAJESH UPADHYAY TAKES CHARGE OF AI TRUTH AND ETHICS AT TOBE ONLINE AFTER LANDMARK MEDIA CAREER

Veteran journalist Rajesh Upadhyay has joined ToBe Online as Chief Integrity Officer, shifting focus to AI ethics and news integrity after a 35-year career. Known for pioneering fact-checking and digital transformation, he aims to embed human oversight and truth standards into evolving AI-driven media ecosystems.

Rajesh Upadhyay, a veteran of India’s media landscape, has stepped into a newly created role as Chief Integrity Officer at ToBe Online, marking a significant pivot from traditional newsroom leadership to the fast-evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and journalism ethics. Tasked with governing truth standards and Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) frameworks, Upadhyay’s mandate signals a growing industry emphasis on ensuring that AI-driven content prioritises accuracy over speed.

The move follows his departure as Editor-in-Chief of Jagran New Media, where he concluded a distinguished tenure shaping one of India’s most influential digital news ecosystems. Over a career spanning more than 35 years, Upadhyay has held leadership roles across major publications including Dainik Bhaskar and Hindustan, consistently advocating for the evolution of the Fourth Estate in a digital-first era.

Central to his philosophy is the JAiJ (Journalist-AI-Journalist) workflow, a model he championed to ensure that while AI enhances scale and efficiency, human editorial judgement remains the ultimate arbiter of truth. This principle now underpins his new role, where he will oversee frameworks designed to balance automation with accountability.

Among his most notable achievements is the founding of Vishvas News, which has emerged as a global benchmark in fact-checking and misinformation mitigation. As a signatory to the International Fact-Checking Network and a trainer under the Google News Initiative, Upadhyay has collaborated with tech giants like Meta and Google on large-scale media literacy campaigns such as ‘Sach Ke Sathi’ and ‘Digi Kavach’, reaching millions across India.

His contributions extend beyond newsroom innovation into academia and policy. Upadhyay has mentored aspiring journalists at institutions including IIM Indore, MICA, IIMC and IGNOU, while also contributing to discussions on ethical AI use in journalism through the Press Council of India.

Reflecting on his transition in a public note, Upadhyay described the end of his tenure at Jagran Digital and Vishvas News as the close of a “remarkable chapter,” highlighting milestones such as the expansion of Jagran’s digital platforms and the transformation of regional publications into agile, technology-enabled newsrooms. He characterised the creation of Vishvas News as a “crusade for integrity” in an era of information disorder.

His new role at ToBe Online represents a continuation of that mission, albeit in a more technologically complex landscape. As AI reshapes content creation and dissemination, Upadhyay’s focus will be on embedding rigorous editorial safeguards into automated systems, ensuring that innovation does not come at the cost of credibility.

“The story of innovation is just beginning,” he noted, hinting at a broader ambition to bridge traditional journalistic values with emerging technologies. In an industry grappling with misinformation and algorithmic influence, his appointment underscores a critical shift: the future of news may be powered by AI, but its integrity will still depend on human judgement.
