A new Diploma in International Event Management & Marketing Studies has been launched through a collaboration between the Event Management Association, Saegis Campus and Pearson UK. The programme aims to equip students with practical skills and global insights, responding to growing demand for trained professionals in the evolving international events industry.

In a significant step towards strengthening professional education in the fast-evolving global events industry, the Event Management Association has partnered with Saegis Campus and Pearson UK to introduce a Diploma in International Event Management & Marketing Studies, a programme designed to blend academic learning with real-world industry exposure.

The launch reflects a broader shift in how event management is being perceived across the world. Once regarded as a largely operational field driven by logistics and creativity, it has now matured into a sophisticated industry that demands strategic thinking, marketing acumen, and a global outlook. With international conferences, cultural festivals, corporate summits, and experiential brand activations becoming more complex and competitive, the need for structured, industry-aligned education has grown rapidly.

This new diploma seeks to address precisely that gap. Developed through a collaborative framework, the programme promises a curriculum that does not remain confined to textbooks but extends into the practical domain through engagement with EMA member companies. Students are expected to gain first-hand exposure to live projects, enabling them to understand the nuances of planning, coordination, branding, and execution in real event environments.

The initiative has been driven by the leadership at Saegis Campus, with Chairman Bandara Dissanayake and Vice Chancellor and CEO Major General Milinda Peiris (Retired) playing key roles in bringing together academic and industry stakeholders. Their involvement underscores a growing recognition among educational institutions that partnerships with industry bodies are essential to produce graduates who are not only qualified but also employable.

Speaking at the launch event, Saliya Weerasekera, President of the EMA, emphasised the resilience of the events sector, particularly in the face of recent global disruptions. He noted that the industry had endured years of uncertainty yet emerged stronger through collaboration and adaptability. According to him, the diploma stands as a testament to that resilience, offering a structured pathway for aspiring professionals to enter and thrive in the field.

His remarks also highlighted a crucial aspect of the programme: its focus on bridging theory and practice. While many academic courses provide foundational knowledge, they often fall short in preparing students for the unpredictable and high-pressure nature of live events. By integrating hands-on training through EMA’s network, the diploma aims to ensure that learners are equipped with both conceptual understanding and practical competence.

The ceremony itself marked an important milestone, not just for the institutions involved but also for the first cohort of students. The formal exchange of the Memorandum of Understanding signified the official beginning of the partnership, while the presentation of enrolment letters to the inaugural batch of six students added a human dimension to the initiative. These students, representing the first wave of participants, symbolise the programme’s aspirations and its potential to shape future industry leaders.

Saegis Campus, located in Nugegoda with convenient access to Colombo, provides the academic backbone for the programme. Known for its emphasis on modern education and industry relevance, the institution has steadily built a reputation for delivering courses that align with both local and global demands. Its campus environment, combining accessibility with well-developed infrastructure, offers students a setting conducive to both learning and personal growth.

The institution’s broader vision is reflected in the design of this diploma. Beyond technical skills, the programme aims to nurture critical thinking, communication, and innovation—qualities that are increasingly essential in a globalised professional landscape. Event management today is not merely about execution; it involves storytelling, audience engagement, digital integration, and brand positioning. As such, professionals in this field must be versatile and forward-thinking.

The involvement of Pearson UK adds an additional layer of credibility and international relevance. As a globally recognised education provider, Pearson’s participation ensures that the curriculum meets international standards, potentially opening pathways for students to pursue further studies or careers beyond national boundaries. This global orientation is particularly important in an industry where cross-border collaboration and cultural understanding play a central role.

Industry observers note that such initiatives are likely to become more common in the coming years. As the knowledge economy expands, traditional degree programmes are increasingly being complemented by specialised diplomas that offer targeted skills and faster entry into the workforce. For sectors like event management, which thrive on innovation and adaptability, these programmes can serve as vital pipelines for talent development.

The timing of the launch is also noteworthy. As the global events industry rebounds and reinvents itself in the wake of technological disruption and changing audience expectations, there is a renewed focus on hybrid events, sustainability, and immersive experiences. Professionals entering the field today must be prepared to navigate these emerging trends, making comprehensive training more important than ever.

For students, the diploma represents more than just an academic qualification; it offers a gateway into a dynamic and evolving profession. The combination of classroom instruction, industry exposure, and international standards positions them to compete in a market that values both expertise and experience. It also provides an opportunity to build networks within the industry, an often overlooked but critical component of career success.

At a broader level, the initiative highlights the importance of collaboration between academia and industry. By working together, institutions and organisations can create programmes that are responsive to real-world needs, thereby enhancing the overall quality of education and employment outcomes. This model, exemplified by the partnership between EMA, Saegis Campus, and Pearson UK, may well serve as a template for future educational ventures.

As the first batch of students embarks on this journey, expectations are high. Their progress will likely be closely watched, not only as a measure of the programme’s success but also as an indicator of the evolving relationship between education and industry. If successful, the diploma could pave the way for similar initiatives across other sectors, reinforcing the idea that education must continually adapt to remain relevant.

In a world where experiences are becoming as valuable as products, the role of event management professionals is set to grow in both scope and significance. By equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to navigate this landscape, the new diploma programme positions itself at the intersection of ambition and opportunity, offering a timely response to the needs of a changing world.
