New Zealand’s Velobike Innovation has unveiled Altias, an Olympic-level track cycling system branded by Onfire. Designed to democratise elite velodrome technology, Altias combines frameset, wheels and components into a unified system, engineered for marginal gains yet priced to reach beyond national programmes, signalling world-class ambition from a small nation.
Velobike Innovation, a boutique New Zealand company, has set its sights on the rarefied world of Olympic track cycling with the launch of Altias, a system designed to challenge the dominance of national programmes backed by vast budgets. Altias is more than a bike; it is a complete track system where frameset, wheels and components are engineered to work seamlessly together, built for athletes chasing the smallest of marginal gains. Crucially, it is priced to reach far beyond the handful of federations that traditionally monopolise cutting-edge technology, democratising access to the elite velodrome fraternity.
The branding brief was as ambitious as the engineering. With no existing identity, Velobike turned to Onfire to create a name, logo and product branding that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s most established cycling systems. The result is Altias, a name echoing Altius, the middle word of the Olympic motto “Faster, higher, stronger”. It signals credibility and ambition, positioning a small New Zealand brand as a serious contender on the global stage.
The design philosophy mirrors the product’s ethos: athlete, equipment and environment tuned to work as one. A custom neo-futurist wordmark, engineered in its geometry, leans forward with controlled speed. The colour palette is deliberately restrained, black on white, a counterpoint to the cacophony of national colours at the Olympic start line. Secondary graphics draw inspiration from the velodrome itself: white racing lines reimagined as staggered patterns, nodding to the sheer controlled power required to push through the pedals. The brand voice flexes between technical precision and blunt sporting truth – “go fast, turn left”.
Altias extends beyond the bike to every touchpoint. Even the shipping box has been engineered with an internal cradle that reduces costs by 16 per cent while protecting the frameset, turning logistics into brand expression. It is a system designed not just to perform but to project credibility, ensuring that when Altias lines up beside the world’s best, it looks like it belongs.
For Velobike, the launch of Altias represents a bold statement: that world-class engineering and branding can emerge from a small country and compete at the highest level. In a sport where fractions of a second define careers, Altias offers athletes – professional or amateur – a chance to chase Olympic ambitions with equipment that is as considered as the bike it adorns.
