Onam 2026: AI Gives Maveli a Thousand Faces

This Onam, Kerala’s festive greetings have been transformed by artificial intelligence. From text and images to audio and video, nearly every message is AI‑generated. Maveli appears in countless avatars, reflecting both the ease of digital creation and the shifting ways tradition is celebrated in a technology‑driven age.

Onam has always been a festival of imagination, colour and shared stories. At its centre stands Maveli, the legendary king whose reign symbolised prosperity and equality. Traditionally, his return is marked with floral carpets, feasts and folk performances. Yet in 2026, Maveli has taken on a new identity—one shaped not by folklore alone but by artificial intelligence.

Across Kerala, greeting messages exchanged during the festival are now almost entirely AI‑generated. Texts composed by algorithms, images crafted by generative models, audio clips voiced by synthetic narrators and videos stitched together by machine learning tools have flooded social media and messaging platforms. The result is a kaleidoscope of Maveli avatars, each one different, each one instantly produced at the click of a button.

The sheer ease of creation appears to be the driving force behind this shift. Where once families spent hours designing cards or composing heartfelt wishes, today a few prompts typed into an AI system can yield polished greetings in seconds. For many, this convenience is irresistible. It allows them to participate in the festive exchange without the labour of traditional preparation, while still producing content that looks creative and engaging.

Maveli, too, has become a digital chameleon. In one greeting he appears as a regal monarch in golden robes, in another as a modern figure dressed in casual attire, and in yet another as a futuristic avatar glowing with neon light. The multiplicity of these portrayals reflects both the adaptability of AI and the evolving cultural imagination of Kerala’s people.

Yet the phenomenon also raises questions. Does the abundance of AI‑generated greetings dilute the personal touch that once defined Onam messages? Is the festival becoming more about spectacle than sincerity? For some, the novelty of seeing Maveli in countless avatars is delightful, a playful extension of tradition into the digital age. For others, it signals a loss of intimacy, as handcrafted wishes give way to machine‑made expressions.

What cannot be denied is the scale of the transformation. Scroll through Instagram or WhatsApp this week and one is greeted by an endless stream of AI‑produced visuals and sounds. The hashtag‑driven culture of social media amplifies this trend, ensuring that Maveli’s digital avatars reach audiences far beyond Kerala. In effect, AI has turned Onam into a global showcase of cultural creativity, albeit one mediated by algorithms.

As Kerala embraces this new mode of celebration, the festival itself becomes a mirror of contemporary life—where tradition and technology coexist, sometimes uneasily, sometimes harmoniously. Maveli’s thousand faces remind us that heritage is not static; it adapts to the tools and imaginations of each generation. This year, those tools happen to be powered by artificial intelligence, and they have given Onam a distinctly modern glow.
