LVMH-owned Glenmorangie has unveiled its oldest whisky to date, a 50-year-old single malt crafted under the guidance of master distiller Dr Bill Lumsden. Presented in 149 porcelain vessels, the release draws on the last floor-malted barley and rare casks from the 1970s, embodying half a century of Highland tradition.
Glenmorangie has marked a historic milestone in Scotch whisky with the release of its oldest expression yet, a 50-year-old single malt that encapsulates five decades of patient maturation and meticulous craft. Presented in 149 porcelain vessels, the Glenmorangie 50 Year Old represents both a tribute to the distillery’s heritage and a showcase of its enduring artistry.
The whisky’s journey began in the mid-1970s, when spirit distilled from the last batches of barley processed in Glenmorangie’s own floor maltings was laid down in Bourbon hogshead casks and first-fill oloroso Sherry butts. The floor maltings were decommissioned in 1977, making this release a rare link to a bygone era of production. Over the years, the liquid developed remarkable depth and character, nurtured by the Highland climate and the distillery’s unwavering commitment to quality.
Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s master distiller, has overseen the whisky’s final three decades of maturation, having joined the distillery in 1995. Early in his tenure, he identified several casks with what he described as “significant” ageing potential. In 1999, he selected a small parcel of whisky from these casks, most of which had matured in Bourbon wood with a smaller proportion from Sherry butts. This liquid was then married in a single refill hogshead barrel, where it continued to evolve into the extraordinary spirit unveiled today.
The Glenmorangie 50 Year Old is more than a testament to time; it is a reflection of Lumsden’s vision and the distillery’s legacy. His stewardship ensured that the whisky retained balance and complexity, drawing out layers of flavour that speak to its unique provenance. The result is a single malt that embodies Glenmorangie’s hallmark elegance while offering a richness and maturity rarely encountered.
The decision to present the whisky in 149 porcelain vessels underscores its exclusivity and artistry. Each vessel serves as a symbol of the rarity of the liquid within, elevating the release beyond the realm of fine spirits into that of cultural artefact. For collectors and connoisseurs, the Glenmorangie 50 Year Old represents not only a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a whisky of unparalleled age but also a tangible piece of the distillery’s history.
This release also highlights Glenmorangie’s role within the LVMH portfolio as a brand that bridges tradition and luxury. By combining heritage production methods with contemporary presentation, the distillery continues to reinforce its position at the forefront of Scotch whisky innovation. The Glenmorangie 50 Year Old stands as a celebration of patience, craft and the enduring allure of Highland single malt, inviting the world to savour half a century of whisky-making excellence.
