A new publication on Port City Colombo has been launched, offering a platform for research, case studies, and industry partnerships. Highlighted by Prof. Dushan Jayawickrama, it deepens collaboration with Sri Lanka’s higher education sector, exposing students and academics to global trends in urban development, infrastructure investment, and economic transformation.

Port City Colombo has taken another significant step in strengthening its ties with Sri Lanka’s academic community through the launch of a new publication dedicated to exploring the challenges and opportunities of one of the country’s most ambitious development initiatives. The publication, unveiled with the endorsement of Prof. Dushan Jayawickrama, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, is designed to serve as a platform for critical thinking, evidence-based learning, and collaborative inquiry.

“This publication offers a unique platform for critical thinking and evidence-based learning on one of the most significant development initiatives in the country – Port City Colombo,” Prof. Jayawickrama remarked, underscoring the importance of academic engagement in shaping the future of the project. His comments reflect a growing recognition that large-scale urban and infrastructure ventures must be informed by rigorous research and scholarly debate if they are to deliver sustainable, long-term benefits.

The initiative builds on Port City Colombo’s ongoing engagement with Sri Lanka’s higher education sector, which has already seen the introduction of workshops, research collaborations, student engagements, ideathons, and knowledge-sharing programmes. These efforts are aimed at exposing students and academics to global trends in urban development, infrastructure investment, and economic transformation, while also encouraging them to contribute fresh ideas and perspectives to the national discourse.

By fostering such partnerships, Port City Colombo is positioning itself not only as a landmark development project but also as a catalyst for intellectual growth and innovation. The publication is expected to feature case studies that highlight both the successes and challenges of similar international projects, offering valuable lessons for Sri Lanka as it navigates its own path towards modernisation. Industry partnerships will further enrich the content, ensuring that academic insights are grounded in practical realities and aligned with the needs of investors, policymakers, and communities.

For students, the publication represents an opportunity to engage directly with issues of urban planning, economic policy, and sustainable development, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. For academics, it provides a forum to test ideas, share findings, and contribute to shaping one of the most transformative projects in Sri Lanka’s recent history.

Port City Colombo’s commitment to knowledge-sharing reflects a broader vision of development that goes beyond bricks and mortar. By embedding research and education into its framework, the project signals its intent to create not just a new urban space, but a hub of learning, innovation, and collaboration that can inspire future generations.

As Sri Lanka continues to recover economically and seek new avenues for growth, initiatives such as this publication highlight the importance of integrating academia into the national development agenda. In doing so, Port City Colombo is not only building a city but also nurturing a culture of inquiry and partnership that could prove vital to the country’s long-term success.
