PUMA Group has appointed Steve Cecchini, formerly head of Nike’s global football clubs, federations and leagues business, as its new sports marketing chief. Effective 1 October 2026, Cecchini will report directly to CEO Arthur Höld, who has overseen the division since Johan Adamsson’s departure last August.

PUMA Group has made a decisive move in its leadership strategy by recruiting Steve Cecchini from Nike to head its sports marketing division. Cecchini, who built his reputation managing Nike’s global football portfolio, will officially join PUMA on 1 October 2026. His appointment fills a critical vacancy left by Johan Adamsson, a 25-year veteran whose exit last August prompted CEO Arthur Höld to temporarily assume direct control of the division.

Cecchini’s arrival marks a significant moment for PUMA, which has been working to sharpen its competitive edge in sports marketing amid intensifying rivalry in the global sportswear industry. His track record at Nike demonstrates a deep understanding of the complex ecosystem of football clubs, federations and leagues, where commercial partnerships and brand positioning intersect with cultural influence and fan engagement. By securing a leader with such expertise, PUMA signals its intent to strengthen its global presence in football and beyond.

Reporting directly to Höld, Cecchini will inherit a division that has been under the CEO’s stewardship for over a year. Höld’s interim leadership ensured continuity, but the appointment of a seasoned specialist reflects PUMA’s recognition of the need for dedicated focus in a sector that drives both brand visibility and commercial growth. Cecchini’s mandate will be to expand PUMA’s influence in sports marketing, leveraging his experience to forge new partnerships, deepen existing relationships, and enhance the brand’s resonance with athletes and fans worldwide.

Industry observers note that PUMA’s decision to poach talent from Nike underscores the competitive dynamics shaping the sportswear market. With football remaining one of the most commercially powerful sports globally, Cecchini’s expertise is expected to be instrumental in positioning PUMA as a stronger challenger to its rivals. His ability to navigate the complexities of sponsorships, league affiliations and cultural storytelling could prove pivotal in elevating PUMA’s profile in a crowded marketplace.

The appointment also reflects a broader trend of sportswear companies investing heavily in leadership talent to drive growth at the intersection of sport and culture. For PUMA, Cecchini’s recruitment is not merely about filling a vacancy; it is a strategic statement of ambition. As the brand continues to expand its global footprint, his leadership is anticipated to catalyse fresh initiatives that align PUMA more closely with the evolving demands of athletes, teams and consumers.

With Cecchini stepping into the role, PUMA enters a new chapter in its sports marketing journey. His appointment restores dedicated leadership to a division central to the company’s identity, while reinforcing PUMA’s determination to compete head-on with industry giants in shaping the future of sportswear.
