STAYFREE’S CAMPAIGN URGES PARENTS TO INCLUDE BOYS IN MENSTRUATION CONVERSATIONS

Stayfree has launched the #ItsJustAPeriod campaign to challenge stigma surrounding menstruation by encouraging parents to include boys in conversations about periods. The initiative highlights how early silence creates discomfort and misunderstanding, and argues that normalising discussions at home can help build a more informed and supportive generation.

Menstrual hygiene brand Stayfree has launched a new awareness initiative aimed at breaking one of the most persistent social taboos around menstruation: the silence that often surrounds it. Through its #ItsJustAPeriod campaign, the brand is urging parents to include boys in conversations about periods, arguing that stigma frequently begins when children are told that menstruation is “none of their business.”

The campaign draws attention to the way attitudes toward menstruation are formed early in life. In many households, discussions about periods are reserved for girls, while boys are kept out of the conversation. This separation, the initiative suggests, creates confusion and discomfort that can persist into adulthood.

According to the campaign’s message, when boys grow up without basic knowledge about menstruation, they may see it as something secret or embarrassing rather than a normal biological process. That misunderstanding can contribute to awkwardness, teasing or silence in schools, social settings and even workplaces later in life.

By encouraging parents to speak openly with both sons and daughters, #ItsJustAPeriod aims to normalise menstruation within families. The initiative stresses that simple conversations at home can help remove the sense of secrecy that often surrounds periods.

The campaign also highlights everyday behaviours that reinforce stigma. In many homes, sanitary products are hidden from view, and discussions about menstrual discomfort take place quietly or behind closed doors. Children notice these signals, often learning that menstruation is something to be concealed rather than understood.

Stayfree’s initiative challenges that pattern by promoting openness and clarity. Parents are encouraged to explain menstruation as a natural part of human biology, much like other health-related topics that children learn about while growing up.

The campaign reflects a broader shift in menstrual health advocacy. For years, awareness programmes largely focused on providing girls with information and access to hygiene products. Increasingly, however, advocates argue that lasting change requires involving boys and men as well.

Educating boys about menstruation can foster empathy and reduce the embarrassment that many girls experience during their school years. When boys understand what periods are and why they occur, the likelihood of teasing or stigma decreases significantly.

#ItsJustAPeriod also emphasises the role of parents in shaping social attitudes. Childhood is often the stage when cultural taboos are first learned. If boys grow up hearing that menstruation should not be discussed, the idea of secrecy becomes normalised. If the topic is explained openly, it becomes simply another aspect of health education.
