The newly introduced Vistadome coaches on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express have become an instant success, with seats fully booked this week and strong demand continuing into next. Operating for the first time in Kerala via Kollam–Punalur–Senkotta, the panoramic coaches offer scenic travel on select days between October and mid-January.
The arrival of Vistadome coaches on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express has sparked remarkable enthusiasm among passengers, marking a milestone in Kerala’s railway experience. For the first time, travellers on this route can enjoy panoramic views through large glass windows and transparent roofs, transforming routine journeys into immersive sightseeing experiences. The allocation of these coaches has already proved a runaway success, with seats fully booked for the current week and demand surging for the weeks ahead.
The Madurai–Guruvayur Express, which runs via Kollam, Punalur and Senkotta, has long been a vital link connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The addition of the Vistadome coach has elevated its appeal, particularly for tourists and families eager to savour the lush landscapes of the Western Ghats and the tranquil countryside along the way. The innovation is not only a first for this route but also a first for Kerala, underscoring Indian Railways’ efforts to blend modern travel comforts with regional tourism potential.
According to the schedule, the Vistadome coach will be attached to train number 16327 from Madurai to Guruvayur between 22 October and 15 January, and to train number 16328 from Guruvayur to Madurai between 23 October and 16 January. The service is available on specific days: on the Madurai–Guruvayur leg, Thursdays through Sundays, and on the Guruvayur–Madurai leg, Fridays through Mondays. This carefully planned timetable ensures weekend travellers and holidaymakers can take advantage of the unique offering.
The popularity of the coaches reflects a growing appetite for experiential travel. Unlike conventional compartments, Vistadome coaches are designed to showcase the journey itself, with wide windows, rotatable seats and glass panels that allow passengers to soak in the scenery. For routes such as Kollam–Punalur–Senkotta, where the train winds through verdant hills, bridges and tunnels, the experience is particularly captivating.
Railway officials have noted the overwhelming response, with bookings filling rapidly and enquiries continuing for the coming weeks. The demand suggests that the Vistadome experiment could pave the way for further expansion across Kerala’s scenic routes, potentially boosting tourism and offering passengers a safer, more enjoyable alternative to road travel.
For Guruvayur, a temple town that draws thousands of pilgrims, the enhanced train service adds another dimension to its accessibility. Visitors can now combine spiritual journeys with leisure travel, enjoying the landscapes en route. For Madurai, a city steeped in history, the connection becomes more than functional—it becomes part of the experience.
The Vistadome coaches on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express thus represent more than a novelty. They embody a shift in how rail travel is perceived: not merely as a means of reaching a destination, but as an integral part of the journey itself. With seats already in high demand, the service is poised to remain a highlight of Kerala’s railway calendar this season.
