Mathrubhumi has won top honours at the 17th Corporate Social Responsibility Summit & Awards for its SEED and Ente Veedu projects. Recognised for environmental empowerment and community development, the initiatives have mobilised schools to protect nature and built over 1,685 homes for the homeless, reflecting the group’s commitment to sustainable social impact.
Kerala’s leading media group, Mathrubhumi, has been recognised for its outstanding contributions to community development and sustainability at the 17th Corporate Social Responsibility Summit & Awards organised by UBS Forums. The organisation received accolades for two of its flagship projects—Student Empowerment for Environmental Development (SEED) and Ente Veedu—under the Community Development Initiative of the Year and Sustainability and Empowerment for Environmental Impact categories, respectively.
The awards, symbolising credibility, integrity and excellence in CSR, were presented to Tanmoy Adak, Regional Head, Media Solutions (West), Mathrubhumi Group, by Siddharth Daga, Co-founder and Chief Impact Officer of Neo Motion. The recognition places Mathrubhumi among the country’s most impactful corporates, NGOs and individuals driving sustainable change.
Launched on 5 June 2009, the SEED project has entered its seventeenth year, having successfully mobilised schools across Kerala to adopt simple yet effective measures in environmental protection. These include planting and safeguarding saplings, agricultural activities, biodiversity conservation, energy and water conservation, cleanliness drives, and reducing, reusing and recycling plastic waste. SEED also encourages students to intervene in local environmental issues through initiatives such as SEED Police and SEED reporters, with Mathrubhumi volunteers acting as mentors and trainers. The project has grown into one of India’s largest school-level green initiatives led by a media organisation, empowering children to become custodians of nature.
Complementing this environmental mission, Mathrubhumi’s Ente Veedu initiative, launched on 28 October 2021, addresses the pressing issue of homelessness. In its first phase, the project successfully constructed 1,000 homes for families living in temporary shelters or makeshift tents. Beneficiaries are selected from across the state, with eligibility criteria ensuring support reaches those owning less than five cents of land and lacking financial means to build a house. The initiative has since expanded, with over 1,685 homes completed across two phases and another 315 currently under construction.
Speaking on the recognition, Devika Shreyams Kumar, Director-Operations, Mathrubhumi Group, emphasised the organisation’s deep commitment to sustainable community upliftment. “This prestigious award makes us even more accountable to the people at large and strengthens our commitment to the sustainable improvement of the quality of life of our communities. Our SEED project empowers schoolchildren to take an active role in protecting and preserving Mother Nature. Through our Ente Veedu initiative, we are committed to helping homeless and underprivileged families realise their dream of owning a home. These numbers are not merely statistics; they are a testament to the lives we have touched and the communities we have empowered.”
The recognition at the CSR Summit underscores Mathrubhumi’s dual focus on environmental stewardship and social welfare. By nurturing ecological awareness among the younger generation and providing shelter to the most vulnerable, the organisation has demonstrated how media-led initiatives can create tangible, lasting impact. As Mathrubhumi continues to expand these projects, its efforts stand as a powerful example of how corporate responsibility can transform lives and communities across Kerala and beyond.
