MAKER’S MARK VENTURES INTO MIZUNARA OAK WITH WORLD WOOD COLLECTION

Maker’s Mark has unveiled Expedition 01, the first release in its new World Wood Collection, marking the distillery’s debut use of Japanese Mizunara oak. The Kentucky bourbon innovator blends oak from three continents, expanding its wood-finishing legacy and offering collectors a rare, globally inspired expression with limited availability.

Maker’s Mark has taken a bold step into uncharted territory with the launch of Expedition 01, the inaugural release in its newly announced World Wood Collection. The Kentucky distillery, long admired for its pioneering approach to wood finishing, has introduced Japanese Mizunara oak into its bourbon for the very first time, signalling a fresh chapter in its flavour exploration.

The World Wood Collection is conceived as a showcase of oak’s diverse influence, drawing staves from three continents to create a layered and distinctive profile. Expedition 01, the debut expression, is anchored by Mizunara oak, a timber revered in whisky circles for its rarity, complexity and the unique character it imparts. Often described as one of the most coveted oaks in the industry, Mizunara is notoriously difficult to work with, owing to its porous grain and scarcity, yet it rewards patience with notes of sandalwood, spice and subtle incense-like aromas.

Maker’s Mark is no stranger to innovation in wood. More than a decade ago, the distillery introduced seared French oak staves with Maker’s Mark 46, a release that redefined its approach to flavour development. Since then, wood finishing has become a hallmark of the brand’s experimentation, allowing it to expand beyond its classic wheated bourbon while maintaining its signature smoothness. Expedition 01 builds on that legacy, but with a global twist, marrying the traditions of Kentucky bourbon-making with the exotic allure of Japanese oak.

The decision to incorporate Mizunara reflects both ambition and respect for craftsmanship. Japanese coopers have long prized the oak for its ability to enrich whisky with layers of complexity, and its introduction into bourbon represents a rare cultural crossover. For Maker’s Mark, the move underscores a willingness to push boundaries while remaining true to its heritage of hand-crafted quality.

Yet, as with many limited releases, availability comes with a catch. Expedition 01 is expected to be highly sought after, with collectors and enthusiasts eager to secure a bottle of this first-of-its-kind bourbon. The scarcity of Mizunara oak, combined with the distillery’s careful selection process, ensures that supply will remain constrained, adding to the allure of the release.

The World Wood Collection promises to be more than a one-off experiment. By drawing inspiration from oaks across continents, Maker’s Mark is positioning itself at the forefront of global whisky innovation, offering drinkers a chance to experience how different woods shape flavour in profound ways. Expedition 01 is not just a bourbon; it is a statement of intent, a declaration that the future of American whiskey can be enriched by international influences without losing its soul.

With this release, Maker’s Mark has reaffirmed its reputation as a distillery that honours tradition while embracing discovery. Expedition 01 sets the stage for future explorations in the World Wood Collection, inviting bourbon lovers to join the journey and taste the world through oak.
