Hyundai Motor has unveiled a $15.5 billion investment programme in India, spanning seven years to 2032. The plan covers manufacturing expansion at Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, R&D infrastructure, localisation of components and emerging mobility ventures, underscoring India’s pivotal role in the company’s global growth and innovation strategy.
Hyundai Motor has announced one of its most ambitious investment programmes in India, committing $15.5 billion over the next seven years to strengthen its manufacturing, research and development, and future mobility capabilities. The investment, which runs until 2032, will be channelled through Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) and Kia India, signalling a long-term strategic bet on the country’s automotive sector.
The programme is designed to expand manufacturing capacity across both Hyundai and Kia operations, ensuring that India remains a central hub for production and exports. With India already serving as a key market for Hyundai, the investment will allow the company to scale up production to meet rising domestic demand while also boosting its export footprint.
A significant portion of the funds will be directed towards building advanced R&D infrastructure. Hyundai aims to deepen its engineering and innovation capabilities in India, particularly in areas such as electrification, connected technologies and autonomous driving. By strengthening local R&D, the company intends to tailor global innovations to the needs of Indian consumers, while simultaneously contributing to its worldwide portfolio of future-ready vehicles.
Localisation of automotive components is another cornerstone of the plan. Hyundai and Kia will work closely with suppliers to increase the domestic sourcing of parts, reducing reliance on imports and enhancing cost competitiveness. This move aligns with the Indian government’s push for greater localisation and self-reliance in manufacturing, while also supporting the development of a robust local supply chain ecosystem.
Beyond traditional automotive operations, Hyundai’s investment will also extend to emerging mobility businesses. This includes ventures in electric mobility, hydrogen fuel technologies, shared mobility platforms and digital services. By diversifying into these areas, Hyundai is positioning itself to capture new opportunities in India’s rapidly evolving mobility landscape, where consumer preferences are shifting towards sustainable and technology-driven solutions.
The scale of the investment underscores Hyundai’s confidence in India’s long-term growth potential. The country’s automotive market is expected to expand significantly over the next decade, driven by rising incomes, urbanisation and government incentives for electric vehicles. Hyundai’s decision to commit such a large sum reflects its ambition to not only maintain but also expand its leadership position in this dynamic environment.
For India, the investment represents a major boost to its industrial and innovation ecosystem. It promises job creation, technology transfer and enhanced competitiveness in the global automotive supply chain. As Hyundai and Kia deepen their roots in the country, the ripple effects are likely to be felt across allied industries, from component manufacturing to digital services.
Hyundai’s $15.5 billion commitment is more than a financial pledge; it is a statement of intent. By aligning manufacturing, R&D, localisation and emerging mobility under one expansive programme, the company is signalling that India will remain at the heart of its global strategy for the next decade and beyond.
