Kerala has unveiled an ambitious five-year mission to empower 3 crore citizens with artificial intelligence literacy. Spearheaded by Jain (Deemed-to-be University) and Future Kerala Mission, the initiative reflects a societal commitment to equip students, professionals, and communities with AI knowledge, ensuring the state is ready for the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow.
A vision for tomorrow begins with action today, and Kerala has taken a decisive step towards shaping its future in the age of artificial intelligence. In a landmark presentation, Tom M. Joseph, Director – New Initiatives at Jain (Deemed-to-be University), formally introduced the Kerala AI Literacy Mission proposal to Hon’ble Minister for AI & IT, Shri P.K. Kunhalikutty, and IT Secretary Seeram Sambasiva. The proposal outlines a transformative five-year social mission designed to empower 3 crore people across the state with essential AI knowledge and awareness.
The mission is not confined to classrooms or laboratories. It seeks to reach every corner of society, from students and educators to professionals, senior citizens, and local communities. By democratising access to AI literacy, the initiative aims to ensure that every Keralite can confidently navigate the opportunities and challenges of the AI era. This inclusivity underscores a critical belief: AI literacy is not merely an educational goal but a societal responsibility.
Driven by Jain (Deemed-to-be University) in collaboration with Future Kerala Mission, the programme reflects a shared vision of preparing Kerala for a digital future where artificial intelligence will play a central role in everyday life. The organisers emphasise that the mission is not about producing a select group of experts but about equipping the entire population with the knowledge to engage meaningfully with AI technologies. Whether it is understanding how AI influences healthcare, agriculture, education, or governance, the mission seeks to make these concepts accessible and relevant to all.
The proposal highlights the importance of building confidence among citizens in using AI tools responsibly and effectively. By fostering awareness, the mission hopes to dispel myths, reduce apprehensions, and encourage communities to embrace AI as a tool for empowerment rather than disruption. In doing so, Kerala positions itself as a pioneer in integrating AI literacy into the social fabric, setting an example for other states and nations.
Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty welcomed the initiative, recognising its potential to strengthen Kerala’s digital ecosystem and prepare its people for a rapidly evolving technological landscape. The mission aligns with the state’s broader vision of leveraging innovation to drive inclusive growth and sustainable development. By embedding AI literacy into everyday life, Kerala is not only preparing its workforce for future opportunities but also ensuring that senior citizens and grassroots communities are not left behind.
The journey towards an AI-literate Kerala has begun, and its significance lies in the collective empowerment of society. As the mission unfolds over the next five years, it promises to transform Kerala into a state where technology is not feared but embraced, where knowledge is shared across generations, and where the future truly belongs to everyone.
