Air India has appointed aviation veteran Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, marking the beginning of a new phase in the airline’s ambitious transformation strategy. The move signals the carrier’s intention to strengthen its global footprint while enhancing safety, service standards and operational excellence.
Few appointments in the aviation industry carry as much symbolic and strategic significance as the naming of a new leader at Air India. As the airline seeks to redefine itself as a leading global carrier, the Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Tewolde Gebremariam as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, succeeding Campbell Wilson.
The appointment represents an important milestone in Air India’s ambitious transformation journey, which began after the Tata Group regained control of the airline. Following a comprehensive global search overseen by a dedicated committee of the Board, directors unanimously concluded that Gebremariam possessed the ideal blend of leadership, operational expertise and strategic vision needed to guide the airline into its next chapter.
The Board’s search focused on identifying a leader capable of steering large-scale airline transformations, maintaining rigorous safety standards, expanding operations profitably and cultivating a strong customer-centric culture. In Gebremariam, Air India believes it has found an executive with precisely those qualities.
Across the global aviation industry, Gebremariam is regarded as one of the sector’s most accomplished leaders. During his tenure of more than a decade as chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines Group, he oversaw one of the most remarkable growth stories in modern aviation. Under his leadership, the airline evolved from a regional operator into Africa’s largest and most profitable aviation group, with revenues increasing more than fourfold and its fleet expanding almost three times in size.
Beyond the numbers, however, his reputation rests upon his ability to manage complex operational environments while building internationally recognised hubs, modern maintenance facilities and advanced aviation training centres.
For Air India, the timing of the appointment is especially significant. The airline has already completed much of its stabilisation and integration process, including mergers, fleet modernisation initiatives and sweeping governance reforms. Attention is now shifting towards expansion, profitability and long-term competitiveness in an increasingly demanding global marketplace.
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, described the appointment as a defining moment for the carrier. He said Gebremariam’s experience in building one of the world’s most efficient airline groups would play a crucial role in establishing Air India as a world-class airline and a source of pride for the nation.
For his part, Gebremariam characterised the opportunity as both an honour and a responsibility. He spoke of Air India’s rich legacy and emphasised the importance of creating an airline that reflects India’s growing economic strength and global influence. He also underlined his commitment to delivering reliability, operational excellence and the renowned warmth of Indian hospitality.
At the heart of Air India’s strategy lies an emphasis on people. Company leaders have repeatedly stressed that pilots, engineers, cabin crew members, ground staff and corporate employees will remain central to the transformation process. Greater investments in training, career development and workplace culture are expected to shape the airline’s future direction.
Passengers, too, are likely to witness visible changes, ranging from improved punctuality and upgraded aircraft interiors to stronger international connectivity and enhanced customer experiences.
The Board also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing chief executive Campbell Wilson, whose leadership laid the foundations for the airline’s revival.
As Air India enters a new era, expectations are understandably high. Yet with substantial financial support, a clear strategic vision and one of the industry’s most respected executives at the controls, the airline appears determined to reclaim a position worthy of the aspirations of a rapidly rising India.
