Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has introduced its flagship seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV, the BYD SEALION 8, in Sri Lanka through distributor John Keells CG Auto. The launch signals growing consumer confidence in new energy vehicles in the country and marks one of the model’s earliest global market debuts.

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has unveiled its flagship seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV, the BYD SEALION 8, in Sri Lanka, marking the model’s South Asian debut and positioning the island nation among the first markets worldwide to introduce the vehicle.

The launch, held on 10 March 2026 at the Cinnamon Lakeside, was organised in partnership with BYD’s authorised local distributor John Keells CG Auto (JKCG Auto). The event brought together customers, automotive and business leaders, and members of the media for the unveiling of the new SUV, including the high-performance DM-p (Dual Mode Performance) variant.

According to the distributor, the introduction of the SEALION 8 reflects the strong momentum the brand has achieved in the Sri Lankan market over the past year. Since its initial deliveries began just over 12 months ago, more than 8,500 BYD vehicles have been registered on the country’s roads, underlining a growing appetite for new energy vehicles (NEVs).

Speaking at the launch, JKCG Auto chief executive Charith Panditharatne said Sri Lanka’s early access to the SEALION 8 demonstrates the confidence the manufacturer has developed in the market. He noted that the positive response from Sri Lankan customers since the brand’s arrival had played a key role in securing the country’s position among the first to receive the new flagship model.

The SEALION 8 expands BYD’s local portfolio with a family-focused vehicle designed to combine the practicality of a seven-seat layout with the performance credentials associated with the brand’s latest electrified technologies. As a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the model integrates electric-assisted driving for everyday commutes with the extended range capability required for longer journeys across the island.

At the launch event, both the Dynamic variant featuring BYD’s DM-i hybrid system and the Premium version equipped with the more powerful DM-p configuration were showcased, highlighting the vehicle’s blend of efficiency, performance and versatility.

Industry observers note that the introduction of the SEALION 8 comes at a time when Sri Lanka’s automotive sector is increasingly exploring electrified mobility solutions, with consumer interest in hybrid and electric vehicles rising steadily. BYD and its local partner say the new model is aimed at customers seeking a spacious family vehicle that supports the country’s broader shift towards more sustainable transport options while maintaining long-distance practicality.
