Havells’ 2017 campaign “Tale of the Tiger,” created with Mullen Lintas, reimagined fire-safety messaging through Tamil Nadu’s Puliyattam folklore. Set within a temple festival, a tiger dancer battled a fire-spitting dragon, his wire-crafted tail withstanding flames. The spectacle fused authenticity, craft and regional culture to strengthen Havells’ southern foothold.
In 2017, Havells departed from its familiar household scenarios to deliver a fire-safety message rooted in South Indian folklore. The campaign, titled Tale of the Tiger, was conceived with Mullen Lintas and staged within the vibrant setting of a temple festival. At its heart was a Puliyattam tiger dancer, a figure steeped in Tamil Nadu’s cultural tradition, locked in a dramatic showdown with a fire-spitting dragon before a crowd of onlookers.
The narrative unfolded with theatrical flair, as the dragon unleashed repeated bursts of flame against the dancer. The twist arrived in the finale: the tiger’s tail, revealed to be crafted from genuine Havells electrical wire, endured the fiery assault and ultimately secured the dragon’s defeat. By embedding its product within a folkloric spectacle, Havells transformed a technical claim into a story of resilience and triumph.
Strategically, the campaign sought to deepen Havells’ presence in southern India by anchoring the message in Puliyattam, a folk performance tradition unique to Tamil Nadu. Once established regionally, the spot was extended nationally through a dubbed version, ensuring the cultural resonance of the original was not lost while broadening its reach.
On set, authenticity was paramount. The production team employed traditional body paint and masks to honour Puliyattam’s heritage, while the dragon costume incorporated a working fire rig to deliver genuine bursts of flame. The wire tail itself was engineered to balance flexibility with visual weight, ensuring it could withstand the rigours of performance while remaining a credible centrepiece.
Music played a crucial role in binding the spectacle to its cultural roots. A drum-heavy, folk-inspired score mirrored the rhythm of Puliyattam, reinforcing the campaign’s regional authenticity and heightening the drama of the showdown. The result was a film that felt both rooted in tradition and elevated by modern craft.
For Havells, Tale of the Tiger was more than a creative departure; it was a strategic statement. By reframing fire safety through folklore, the brand demonstrated its ability to adapt messaging to regional contexts while maintaining universal appeal. The campaign exemplified how cultural storytelling can transform product attributes into memorable experiences, ensuring that Havells’ wires were not just seen as safe, but celebrated as enduring symbols of protection.
