American firm Hennessey has unveiled a hypercar inspired by aviation legends, notably the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and Bell X-1. Featuring active vertical stabilisers, a diamond-shaped exhaust, and a bespoke 6.2-litre V8 producing 850 bhp, the $2.5 million machine will be limited to 71 units, with production slated for 2029.

Hennessey has announced its latest creation, a hypercar that draws heavily on the design and spirit of aviation history. Inspired by the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, the car incorporates distinctive features that pay homage to one of the most celebrated aircraft ever built. Among its most striking elements are active vertical rear stabilisers, which automatically extend from the centre of the rear wing at 71 mph, angled at +/- 71 degrees in a deliberate nod to the SR-71. This detail underscores the company’s commitment to blending engineering precision with symbolic design.

The influence of aviation continues with the exhaust system, which adopts a diamond-shaped design inspired by the Bell X-1, the pioneering aircraft that first broke the sound barrier. These flourishes are not mere aesthetic choices but part of Hennessey’s broader ambition to create a machine that stands apart from the prevailing trends in the hypercar industry. The Texas-based firm describes the car as a “deliberate counterpoint” to the sector’s increasing focus on electrification and digital mediation, positioning its new model as a celebration of mechanical purity and visceral performance.

At the heart of the car lies a bespoke 6.2-litre V8 engine, delivering 850 bhp. This powertrain enables the hypercar to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 220 mph. Such figures place it firmly among the elite of performance vehicles, yet Hennessey insists that the car’s appeal lies not only in its speed but in its character. By choosing a traditional combustion engine, the company is making a statement about the enduring allure of analogue driving experiences in an era increasingly dominated by electrification.

The car’s body is constructed from carbon fibre, ensuring both strength and lightness, while its design language reflects the aerodynamic principles of the aircraft that inspired it. Every detail, from the stabilisers to the exhaust, has been conceived to evoke the pioneering spirit of aviation while delivering cutting-edge automotive performance.

Exclusivity is central to the project. Only 71 units will be produced, each priced at $2.5 million. Production is scheduled to begin in 2029, giving collectors and enthusiasts time to anticipate what promises to be one of the most distinctive hypercars of the decade. For Hennessey, this is not simply another addition to its portfolio but a bold declaration of intent: a machine that honours the past while challenging the future direction of the industry.
