Les Anges Noirs, an ultra-limited edition cognac decanter created by Compair Design Studio for Les Liens Cognaçais & Baron Otard (Bacardi), embodies heritage, craftsmanship, and mystery. Inspired by the Black Angels of Cognac’s cellars, only 418 pieces exist, uniting exceptional spirits with luxury perfumery in a singular collector’s creation.
In the world of fine spirits, few creations manage to transcend their category and become cultural artefacts. The Les Anges Noirs decanter, conceived by Compair Design Studio for Les Liens Cognaçais & Baron Otard (Bacardi), achieves precisely that. Designed as an object of convergence between exceptional cognac and luxury perfumery, it is an ultra-limited edition of just 418 pieces, destined to be treasured by collectors.

The inspiration lies deep within Cognac’s century-old cellars, where a mysterious black veil covers stones and facades. Scientifically explained as Torula, a microfungus nourished by the “angels’ share” of evaporating alcohol, locals interpret it differently. For them, it is the mark of the Black Angels—guardians of the eaux-de-vie, protectors of barrels, and symbols of patience, heritage, and craftsmanship. This legend became the creative foundation for Les Anges Noirs, infusing the decanter with mystique and reverence.
To bring this vision to life, a remarkable collaboration of artisans and craftsmen was assembled. The ambition was clear: to create a stately piece that evokes emotion at first glance. Glass, wood, zamak, chrome detailing, and technical coatings were combined in a multi-material approach, ensuring every detail elevated both visual and sensory experience. The neck label, crafted from premium aluminium adhesive material and enhanced with Avery Dennison Silver Foil, adds sculptural depth through precise dry embossing.
The closure, developed by Les Bouchages Delage, became a central design challenge. Inspired by luxury watch bracelets, it references time, transmission, and aging—concepts intrinsic to cognac. This bi-material piece unites wood and zamak, completed with natural cork. Its upper medallion, sculpted in relief, embodies the Black Angel, requiring extensive 3D modelling and engineering to achieve industrial feasibility without sacrificing artistry.
Saverglass elevated the decanter with a glossy gradient coating and silver chrome detailing, deliberately echoing the visual language of luxury fragrance packaging. To ground the piece in its terroir, Doreau Tonnellerie crafted a handcrafted oak base from cooperage wood, directly linking the decanter to barrels, cellars, and the legend itself.
Presentation was equally considered. Maestro Packaging developed a premium gift box using mono-material construction enriched with embossing, hot foil stamping, and complex 3D sculpted tooling. Inside, alongside the decanter, rests an exclusive tulip glass and a 100-page booklet designed as a captain’s logbook, retracing the story, craftsmanship, and creative journey behind Les Anges Noirs.
To immerse audiences further, VD Production created a short film for the launch, extending the narrative of the Black Angels and bringing their legend vividly to life.
Les Anges Noirs is more than a vessel for cognac; it is a collective adventure in design, engineering, and storytelling. Every contributor played a vital role in shaping a singular masterpiece—an object that bridges worlds, honours heritage, and embodies the mystery of Cognac’s guardians.
