In a significant leadership transition, Meta has named Joel Kaplan as its new Global Head of Policy, succeeding Nick Clegg, who will step down after seven years in the role. Kaplan, currently serving as Meta’s Vice President of Policy, is set to take over as Clegg transitions out of the company in the coming months.

Kaplan, a seasoned policy expert and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff under President George W. Bush, joined Meta in 2011. Over the years, he has played a crucial role in shaping the company’s global policy framework, particularly during a period of increasing regulatory scrutiny and shifting societal expectations surrounding technology. His appointment signals Meta’s continued focus on navigating complex political and societal landscapes while advancing its strategic objectives.

Nick Clegg, who joined Meta in 2018 amidst the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, has been instrumental in rebuilding the company’s reputation and steering its policy direction through challenging times. Reflecting on his departure, Clegg described it as the “right time” to hand over the reins. He expressed confidence in Kaplan’s ability to lead, calling him the “right person for the right job at the right time.”

Kaplan’s new role will encompass leading Meta’s global policy strategy, ensuring that the company remains aligned with regulatory expectations while fostering innovation and growth in an ever-changing digital environment.

In a related announcement, Kevin Martin, former Chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and a prominent Republican policymaker, has been named Vice President of Global Policy. Martin will succeed Kaplan in this position, continuing Meta’s efforts to engage with policymakers and regulators worldwide effectively.

These leadership changes come as Meta faces increasing scrutiny and responsibilities, particularly in areas such as data privacy, content moderation, and the broader societal impacts of its platforms. The transitions aim to ensure a seamless continuation of the company’s policy initiatives and reinforce its commitment to responsible innovation.
