MIDNIGHT X HOTDOG PETS: A JOYFUL COLLISION OF WORLDS

Midnight Cosmetics and Hotdog have unveiled a limited edition collaboration that fuses minimal sophistication with irreverent playfulness. Designed by SMLXL, the packaging disrupts Midnight’s monochrome aesthetic with vivid gouache illustrations, creating a tactile, emotional design that balances restraint and expression while visualising softness, hydration, and flow for pets.

When two brands with seemingly opposite identities collide, the result can either jar or surprise. Midnight Cosmetics, known for its pared-back monochrome sophistication, and Hotdog, celebrated for its expressive irreverence, have chosen the latter path with their limited edition collaboration, Midnight 00.00 X HotDog Pets. The project demanded a delicate balance: merging Midnight’s restrained elegance with Hotdog’s exuberant energy, while ensuring the packaging conveyed the mist’s sensory benefits for dogs.

The design was led by SMLXL Company, a full-service design practice founded by Anna Berbiela Rodriguez, Guillem Casasus and Javier Arizu—all three former co-founders of the acclaimed design studio Pràctica (2018–2024). With bases in New York and Barcelona, SMLXL has built a reputation for projects that influence contemporary visual culture, ranging from large-scale identity systems for sports events to intimate bookstore branding, from covers for The New York Times Magazine to Seth Rogen’s Houseplant cannabis packaging line. Their work consistently seeks to provide meaning for brands and individuals, and this collaboration is no exception.

The team approached the challenge by deliberately disrupting Midnight’s signature aesthetic. Instead of stark monochrome, the packaging bursts with vivid gouache illustrations of dogs in motion. These fluid, colourful depictions are not merely decorative; they embody the product’s promise of softness, hydration, and flow. The illustrations capture the vitality of pets while adding a tactile, emotional layer to the experience of the mist.

Texture plays a crucial role in this visual narrative. Rich, painterly strokes and bold colour choices create a sense of movement and warmth, contrasting with Midnight’s usual cool restraint. This interplay of opposites transforms functionality into joy, making the packaging itself a sensory extension of the product. The mist’s benefits are communicated not through words alone but through the visual language of motion and touch.

The collaboration highlights how design can bridge divergent brand worlds. Midnight’s minimalism provides the structural backbone, ensuring the packaging retains a refined, premium feel. Hotdog’s irreverence injects vibrancy and humour, preventing the design from becoming sterile. Together, they achieve a balance that feels both unexpected and harmonious.

For consumers, the packaging offers more than a container; it becomes part of the ritual of care. The joyful illustrations invite interaction, while the refined system ensures the product remains aspirational. This duality—playful yet polished—reflects the evolving expectations of pet owners, who increasingly seek products that combine functionality with emotional resonance.

Ultimately, Midnight 00.00 X HotDog Pets is a testament to the power of creative risk. By daring to disrupt its own identity, Midnight Cosmetics has expanded its visual vocabulary, while Hotdog has found a new canvas for its expressive energy. With SMLXL’s deft hand, the result is a packaging system that does more than hold a product—it tells a story of restraint meeting exuberance, of care meeting joy, and of two worlds colliding to create something greater than the sum of their parts.
