Joseph Fraser Ninewells Hospital has launched ParentX, Sri Lanka’s first postpartum retreat, offering mothers structured recovery during the “fourth trimester.” Combining evidence-based care with cultural practices, the programme supports physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing, reinforcing postpartum recovery as essential to motherhood and advancing maternal healthcare in Sri Lanka.
ParentX, developed by Joseph Fraser Ninewells Hospital, has introduced Sri Lanka’s first dedicated postpartum retreat, marking a significant step in maternal healthcare. The initiative brings to the country an internationally recognised model of recovery for mothers after childbirth, emphasising that a mother’s wellbeing deserves equal attention to the birth itself.
Often described as the “fourth trimester,” the weeks following childbirth remain one of the least supported stages of motherhood despite growing global recognition of their importance. Around the world, postpartum recovery centres have become an established part of maternal care, offering mothers physical, emotional, and mental support while helping them gain confidence in caring for their newborns. ParentX adapts this model for Sri Lankan families, blending evidence-based practices with cultural familiarity.
Yoosuf Sabir, Deputy General Manager at Joseph Fraser, explained: “A mother’s care should not end with the birth of her baby. Recovery after childbirth is a critical stage that deserves the same level of attention as pregnancy itself. ParentX was created to provide mothers with the time, professional guidance, and compassionate care they need to recover, regain confidence, and begin parenthood on the strongest possible foundation.”
The programme, developed by Joseph Fraser’s multidisciplinary clinical team, offers personalised breastfeeding support, newborn care education, physiotherapy, nutrition planning, emotional wellness counselling, mindfulness sessions, Ayurveda-inspired therapies, and guidance for partners and family members to actively support recovery. By combining modern medical expertise with culturally familiar practices, ParentX creates a holistic recovery experience tailored to local needs.
The launch comes as postpartum wellbeing gains increasing global attention, with evidence showing that structured support during the fourth trimester improves maternal recovery, strengthens parent-child bonding, supports mental health, and leads to better outcomes for both mother and baby. In Sri Lanka, where birth rates continue to decline, ParentX represents a timely addition to maternal healthcare, reframing postpartum recovery as an essential part of motherhood rather than an optional extra.
ParentX underscores Joseph Fraser’s commitment to advancing women’s health by extending care beyond childbirth and addressing a critical gap in Sri Lanka’s maternity care landscape.
