Roku Japanese Gin from the House of Suntory has launched the limited-edition Noryo Tea Edition, inspired by Japan’s summer tradition of seeking coolness. Featuring Sencha and Gyokuro teas, the seasonal gin highlights peak botanicals and craftsmanship, offering a refreshing sensory profile and a signature summer cocktail, the Noryo Fizz.
The House of Suntory has expanded the seasonal universe of its premium craft spirit with the global launch of the Noryo Tea Edition, a limited-time summer expression of Roku Japanese Gin. Inspired by the Japanese cultural tradition of Noryo – the practice of seeking coolness during the height of summer – the new release aims to capture the calm, reflective moments often spent near water, where people slow their pace and reconnect with nature.
The Noryo Tea Edition marks the second instalment in Roku’s Seasonal Festival Collection, following the earlier Sakura Bloom Edition. With each release, the brand draws on Japanese seasonal customs and ingredients to create expressions that reflect both tradition and craftsmanship. In the case of the Noryo Tea Edition, the focus turns to tea, one of Japan’s most revered sensory rituals.
Central to the new gin are two of the six signature botanicals that define Roku’s flavour profile: Sencha tea and Gyokuro green tea. These ingredients are amplified in the Noryo Tea Edition to highlight their nuanced flavours at their seasonal peak. Sencha contributes fresh, grassy aromas that introduce the spirit with a gentle brightness, while Gyokuro, one of Japan’s most prized green teas, delivers a deeper umami richness on the palate.
The creation of the spirit is guided by the Japanese philosophy of Shun, which celebrates ingredients at the precise moment when their flavour, ripeness and freshness reach their pinnacle. For the distillers at Suntory, Shun is not merely a production principle but a cultural perspective that shapes the way botanicals are sourced and combined.
This philosophy is reflected in the sensory journey of the Noryo Tea Edition. On the nose, delicate grassy notes from Sencha rise above gentle citrus and classic juniper-led gin aromas. The palate unfolds with the layered umami character of Gyokuro tea, balanced by light floral tones that lend elegance and lift. The finish introduces bright yuzu, subtle sansho spice and lingering green tea notes, creating a refreshing profile designed to evoke the cooling sensations associated with Japan’s summer rituals.
Beyond the liquid itself, the bottle design echoes the spirit of Noryo through carefully considered details. Tea-leaf illustrations are subtly outlined across the surface, while botanicals are embossed directly into the glass, reinforcing Roku’s identity as a craft gin rooted in Japanese ingredients. The label, crafted from traditional washi paper and accented with shades of green, reflects both the tea-forward character of the expression and the broader theme of seasonality.
Together, these design elements tell a visual story of Japanese craftsmanship, mirroring the thoughtful approach that defines the gin’s production. The emphasis on tactile details and natural motifs also reinforces the connection between the spirit and the landscapes and rituals that inspired it.
The Noryo Tea Edition has also been developed with seasonal cocktails in mind, particularly lighter serves suited to warm weather. Among the recommended recipes is the Noryo Fizz, a bright and refreshing cocktail that highlights the gin’s tea-forward profile.
The drink combines Roku Gin Noryo Tea Edition with honeydew melon, lemon juice, simple syrup and club soda. To prepare it, fresh melon cubes are muddled in a shaker before the gin, lemon juice and syrup are added along with ice. The mixture is shaken, fine strained into a Collins glass filled with ice and topped with soda. A melon ball garnish completes the serve, adding a subtle sweetness that complements the tea notes within the spirit.
With this latest release, Roku continues to build a narrative around seasonality and Japanese culture, positioning its limited editions as expressions of specific moments in the year. While the Sakura Bloom Edition evoked the fleeting beauty of spring blossoms, the Noryo Tea Edition reflects the slower rhythms of summer and the sensory rituals that accompany it.
For the brand, these seasonal expressions serve not only as product innovations but also as cultural storytelling. By weaving together botanicals, design and tradition, the Noryo Tea Edition offers drinkers a taste of the Japanese summer ethos – one defined by calm, refreshment and an appreciation for nature at its most vibrant.
