Sanjay Rao has been appointed CEO and Managing Director of Bata India Limited. He joins from Nike, where he was Senior Director for Retail in France and Benelux. With leadership experience at GUESS?, Inditex, The TJX Companies and Citi, Rao brings global retail expertise to strengthen Bata’s growth strategy.

Bata India Limited has announced the appointment of Sanjay Rao as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, marking a significant leadership change at one of the country’s most iconic footwear brands. Rao steps into the role with a wealth of international retail experience, having most recently served as Senior Director, Nike Retail – France and Benelux.

His move to Bata signals a strategic emphasis on global best practices and consumer-centric innovation. At Nike, Rao was instrumental in driving retail expansion and enhancing customer engagement across key European markets. His tenure there was marked by a focus on digital integration and experiential retail, areas increasingly critical to the footwear industry’s evolution.

Prior to Nike, Rao held senior leadership positions at GUESS?, Inditex, The TJX Companies and Citi, building a diverse portfolio that spans fashion, lifestyle, and financial services. This breadth of experience is expected to serve him well as Bata continues to balance its heritage as a trusted household brand with the demands of a rapidly changing retail landscape.

Industry observers note that Rao’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Bata India, which has been working to modernise its brand image and expand its footprint in both urban and semi-urban markets. The company has invested in digital transformation, omni-channel retailing, and product diversification, aiming to appeal to younger consumers while retaining its loyal customer base.

Rao’s global perspective is likely to accelerate these efforts. His background in managing large-scale retail operations and navigating competitive international markets positions him to strengthen Bata’s presence in India and beyond. Analysts suggest his leadership could help the company sharpen its focus on premiumisation, sustainability, and innovation – areas increasingly shaping consumer choices.

For Bata India, which has been part of the country’s retail fabric for nearly nine decades, the appointment underscores its ambition to remain relevant in a dynamic marketplace. Rao’s challenge will be to blend tradition with transformation, ensuring that Bata continues to resonate with generations of Indian consumers while embracing the future of footwear retail.
