The Y Australia has launched “It Starts Here”, its first unified national brand platform in a decade, developed by Think HQ. The campaign unites 11 member associations under a single proposition, aiming to reposition The Y as a hub for community connection and belonging. It will run nationally until June 2027.
The Y Australia has unveiled “It Starts Here”, its first unified national brand platform, designed to strengthen Australians’ connection with the organisation and highlight the breadth of its community work nationwide. Developed by agency partner Think HQ, the campaign marks one of The Y’s most significant national brand initiatives in a decade.
Launched on 11 October, the platform unites The Y’s 11 member associations under a single strategic proposition, aiming to shift perceptions of the organisation beyond its traditional association with sport and recreation. Instead, “It Starts Here” positions The Y as a place where Australians can connect with their communities, build belonging and realise their potential. Drawing on The Y’s 175-year history in Australia, the campaign places real people and community experiences at its core.
Think HQ was tasked with creating a scalable national creative platform that could unify The Y’s diverse services and programs while allowing member associations the flexibility to adapt the brand locally. The campaign is particularly targeted at Australians aged 16–45, a demographic seeking accessible ways to connect with their communities amid increasingly busy lives.
Sam McCarron, Creative Director at Think HQ, said the campaign was an opportunity to showcase the organisation’s breadth. “The Y has been part of Australian communities for 175 years, but there’s so much more to the organisation than many people realise. ‘It Starts Here’ gave us an opportunity to bring that breadth to life through a single national idea that feels human, relevant and grounded in the experiences of real communities,” he said. “It’s been around a decade since The Y has undertaken a national brand campaign of this scale, so it’s been a privilege to work with the team on such an important piece and create a platform that can grow with the organisation.”

Vanessa Heron, Head of Brand and Marketing at The Y Australia, emphasised the collaborative nature of the project. “Working with Think HQ on ‘It Starts Here’ has been a genuinely collaborative process. With 11 member associations and communities right across Australia, creating a platform that could bring everyone together while still reflecting the breadth and diversity of The Y was incredibly important to us. Think HQ understood that challenge from the outset and became a trusted partner throughout the journey. We’re incredibly proud of where we’ve landed and excited to show Australians what The Y means today.”
The integrated campaign will roll out nationally across broadcast video-on-demand (BVOD), subscription video-on-demand (SVOD), social, online and out-of-home channels. Media placements include arterial billboards, transport advertising and digital displays in shopping centres, with coverage spanning 10 Play, 9Now, 7plus, SBS On Demand, Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Binge and Kayo, alongside Meta and ChatGPT.
Think HQ has produced six creative variations for out-of-home and static social, a 30-second film for BVOD and SVOD, and a suite of brand templates enabling member associations to extend the national platform through their own state-based campaigns. “It Starts Here” will run through to June 2027, signalling a long-term commitment to reshaping perceptions of The Y and reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of Australian community life.
