A SELF WOVEN BY TIME: MINON’S NEW EXHIBITION MAPS THE THREADS OF MEMORY AND IDENTITY

Award-winning actor and self-taught artist Minon presents Njarala, an exhibition shaped by six years of personal reflection and artistic evolution. Drawing on memories, emotions and human connections, the collection explores the self as a web woven over time, offering an intimate portrait of identity, change and creative growth.

Award-winning actor and artist Minon is inviting audiences into a deeply personal exploration of identity with his latest exhibition, Njarala, a body of work that examines how individuals are shaped by the experiences, memories and relationships that accumulate throughout life.

The title Njarala emerges from the fusion of two concepts: Njan, meaning “the self”, and Marala, meaning “a spider’s web”. Together, they form a poetic framework through which the artist seeks to understand human identity. In Minon’s vision, the self is not a fixed entity but something continuously woven and rewoven, much like a spider’s intricate web.

“Like a spider’s web, we are shaped by countless threads of experiences, memories, emotions and connections,” the artist explains. Some of these threads remain with us, some disappear over time, and others remain beyond full comprehension. The exhibition reflects on this delicate and often complex process of becoming.

The collection has its roots in the past six years of Minon’s life, a period during which personal experiences gradually transformed both his outlook and his artistic practice. As he moved through different stages of life, his observations of people, recollections of moments and imaginings of the lives of others increasingly found expression on canvas. Over time, these influences helped reshape his artistic voice.

Rather than presenting a series of detached visual narratives, Njarala functions as a personal archive of emotional and creative evolution. The paintings carry traces of the artist’s own journey, revealing how his perceptions of the world have shifted and matured. The exhibition is described as holding fragments of who he has been, what he has carried with him and how he has come to understand the world around him.

For visitors, the exhibition offers both an intimate encounter with the artist’s inner landscape and an opportunity for self-reflection. The themes of memory, loss, connection and transformation are universal, encouraging viewers to consider the invisible threads that shape their own identities.

Minon’s artistic journey is itself unconventional. A self-taught artist from Kerala, India, he grew up outside the conventional education system, developing an early relationship with art as a means of observing and understanding the world. What began as a personal mode of expression eventually grew into a prolific career.

Since holding his first exhibition in 2008, Minon has staged more than 60 exhibitions and led numerous art workshops, building a reputation for work that combines introspection with visual storytelling. Alongside his achievements in the art world, he has also enjoyed considerable success as an actor in the Malayalam film industry, appearing in 33 films.

His contributions to cinema have earned significant recognition, including both a National Film Award and a Kerala State Film Award. Yet Njarala demonstrates that, beyond the accolades, Minon remains committed to exploring the questions that have long driven his creative practice: who we are, how we change and the memories that continue to shape us.

With Njarala, those questions are rendered not as answers, but as a living web of stories, emotions and experiences woven through time.
