Kerala’s famed Aranmula Vallasadya has commenced at Sree Parthasarathy Temple in Pathanamthitta, running from 27 July until 16 September. The centuries-old ritual, celebrated as an act of devotion and hospitality, offers oarsmen a lavish feast of traditional dishes. It is a cultural spectacle where community, faith and Kerala’s culinary heritage converge.

The temple town of Aranmula has once again opened its doors to one of Kerala’s most cherished traditions. The Aranmula Vallasadya, hosted at the historic Sree Parthasarathy Temple in Pathanamthitta, begins on 27 July and will continue until 16 September, drawing devotees, oarsmen and visitors into a celebration that embodies the spirit of God’s Own Country.

The Vallasadya is no ordinary feast. It is a grand offering of more than 60 dishes, ranging from tangy curries and pickles to sweet payasams, all served on banana leaves. Each dish is prepared with devotion, and the act of serving is considered a sacred duty. The oarsmen, who row the famed snake boats during Kerala’s regattas, are seated in rows and honoured with this lavish spread.

What makes the Vallasadya unique is its philosophy of hospitality. Unlike many rituals, this feast is not offered to deities but to men whose labour and devotion are seen as sacred. The oarsmen’s songs echo through the temple precincts, weaving together rhythm, faith and camaraderie, while the aroma of freshly prepared dishes fills the air.

For devotees, hosting the feast is an act of gratitude and reverence. For visitors, it is a chance to witness Kerala’s cultural richness in its most authentic form. The atmosphere in Aranmula during these weeks is electric, with the temple town transformed into a vibrant stage of tradition and community spirit.

Kerala Tourism has highlighted the Vallasadya as a celebration where every tradition finds a place at the table. It is not merely about food or festivity, but about the deeper meaning of shared joy, inclusivity and devotion. As the event unfolds, it reaffirms Kerala’s ability to blend ritual with celebration, ensuring that this centuries-old tradition continues to thrive.
