Heartwood Community Forest, designed by CRUSH, unites communities to create new woodlands across Derbyshire. Its identity blends strategic clarity with playful illustrations that animate across digital and print touchpoints. Warm yet distinctive, the brand inspires participation and highlights the initiative’s long-term environmental impact, making conservation approachable and engaging.

Heartwood Community Forest, developed by CRUSH, is a collaborative initiative that brings together landowners, farmers, businesses and local communities to create new woodlands across Derbyshire. At its core, the project sought a brand identity that could celebrate the people and places driving the scheme while remaining approachable, engaging and easy to understand.

The creative solution was built on a clear strategic foundation, ensuring that the identity was not only visually distinctive but also purposeful. CRUSH introduced a playful visual language, using bespoke illustrations that grow and animate across digital touchpoints. This design choice reflects the continual development of the forest itself, symbolising growth, renewal and the collective effort behind the initiative.

Extending beyond digital platforms, the identity was carefully applied to printed materials, the project’s website and comprehensive brand guidelines. This consistency ensures that Heartwood Community Forest maintains a coherent presence across all channels, while the warmth and character of the design invite participation from diverse audiences. The balance between clarity and creativity was crucial: the brand needed to communicate the long-term environmental impact of the scheme while remaining accessible to those unfamiliar with conservation projects.

The result is a brand that feels both distinctive and inclusive. By combining strategic clarity with imaginative storytelling, Heartwood Community Forest positions itself not simply as a conservation programme but as a community movement. The identity encourages individuals and organisations to see themselves as part of Derbyshire’s evolving landscape, reinforcing the idea that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility.

In an era where sustainability initiatives often struggle to engage the public, Heartwood’s brand demonstrates how design can bridge the gap between ecological ambition and everyday participation. The playful illustrations and approachable tone make the project feel less like a distant environmental agenda and more like a local story in which everyone has a role. This approach not only strengthens community involvement but also ensures the initiative’s longevity by embedding it within the cultural fabric of the region.

Heartwood Community Forest stands as a model for how branding can elevate environmental projects. By celebrating the human dimension of conservation and making participation inviting, CRUSH has created an identity that is as enduring as the woodlands it seeks to grow.
