Hyundai Motor India has announced a significant leadership transition with the appointment of Mukundan MS as Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer, effective 1 September 2026. The appointment, subject to shareholder approval at the company’s forthcoming Annual General Meeting, comes as Gopalakrishnan CS retires after a distinguished tenure.
Mukundan, who currently heads production in the Chief Manufacturing Officer’s office, brings more than 25 years of experience in automotive manufacturing. His career at Hyundai has been marked by a series of strategic initiatives that have reshaped the company’s production landscape. From expanding capacity to introducing flexible SUV manufacturing systems, Mukundan has consistently driven innovation and efficiency.
A strong advocate of sustainability, he has overseen projects aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and integrating renewable energy into Hyundai’s operations. His leadership has also been pivotal in preparing integrated production lines capable of handling both internal combustion engine and electric vehicles, a move that positions Hyundai at the forefront of India’s automotive transition.
The timing of his appointment is significant. India’s automotive industry is undergoing rapid change, with electric mobility gaining traction and consumer expectations evolving. Hyundai’s decision to elevate Mukundan reflects its commitment to balancing operational excellence with forward-looking innovation. His expertise in AI-driven quality improvement programmes and advanced manufacturing systems is expected to play a crucial role in steering Hyundai through this transformation.
In parallel, Hyundai Motor India has also inducted Young Geon Kim as Senior Management Personnel from 1 August 2026. With over three decades of experience in automotive manufacturing and engineering, Kim has already contributed to Genesis production readiness and new facility development since joining the company in 2025. His presence adds depth to Hyundai’s leadership team, ensuring continuity and resilience in its manufacturing strategy.
As Hyundai marks three decades in India, the company is keenly aware of the need to evolve with the times. Popular models such as the Santro, i10, CRETA and IONIQ 5 have cemented its place in the market, but the future lies in embracing both conventional and electric mobility. The appointments of Mukundan MS and Young Geon Kim reflect Hyundai’s vision of building a robust, sustainable and future-ready manufacturing ecosystem in India.
