London Packaging Week 2026 opened with bold debates, pioneering technologies and fresh perspectives on sustainability, inclusivity and design. From aerospace-inspired simulations to fossil-free plastics, and from provocative panels to live podcast recordings, the event showcased packaging’s evolving role as a collaborative, consumer-focused discipline shaping the future of brands and industries.

London Packaging Week 2026 has once again demonstrated why it is regarded as one of the most influential gatherings in the global packaging calendar. This year’s edition combined thought-provoking debates, cutting-edge innovations and a renewed focus on inclusivity and sustainability, underscoring the industry’s pivotal role in shaping consumer experiences and environmental outcomes.

The event opened with a reminder of the scale of transformation underway, with speakers emphasising that deposit return schemes represent not just a project but a generational opportunity to improve recycling quality and reduce litter. Despite the complexities, organisers stressed their determination to deliver workable solutions.

Among the most talked-about sessions was a provocative Q&A titled End of the brief, which explored whether the rise of AI signals the decline of traditional design agencies. Claudette Munroe, Managing Director at Contrast, questioned whether in-house creative dominance reflects genuine ambition or cautious conformity. “At what point do guidelines stop protecting the brand and start preventing it from evolving?” she asked. Peter Borowski, Head of Global Design at Tyson Foods, added: “Flexibility is critical. Stay true to who you are, but allow the flexibility to break out and have fun.”

On the show floor, exhibitors revealed some of the most exciting innovations. Rhoss Adams of Crux Product Design showcased how aerospace engineering tools are being adapted for packaging, enabling simulations that surpass physical testing and help brands make more informed decisions. Meanwhile, Markku Tikkanen of Vioneo urged a holistic approach to plastics, stressing that circularity and reduced material use are essential for genuine sustainability.

The programme also embraced new formats, including a podcast studio where attendees could listen live. One highlight was a recording of Future Proof, Kantar’s flagship marketing podcast, featuring Michelle Atkinson of Carlsberg Britvic. She emphasised the importance of inclusive design, noting that consumer need states and occasions should guide innovation. “The work in inclusivity is opening up new occasions for more people, and ensuring everybody can enjoy their products,” she said.

With another day of talks, live podcasts, networking and the prestigious Innovation Awards still to come, London Packaging Week 2026 continues to set the benchmark for creativity, collaboration and discovery in the packaging industry.
