Apple has launched Apple Pay in India, enabling iPhone and Apple Watch users to make secure contactless payments with Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Using tokenisation and biometric authentication, the service will expand to more banks and merchants, strengthening Apple’s presence in India’s fast-growing digital payments market.

Apple has officially launched Apple Pay in India, enabling iPhone and Apple Watch users to make seamless contactless payments with eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. The rollout marks a significant milestone for Apple’s financial services expansion in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital payments markets.

The service leverages tokenisation technology, ensuring that sensitive card details are replaced with unique digital tokens, thereby enhancing transaction security. Biometric authentication through Face ID and Touch ID adds another layer of protection, aligning with Apple’s global emphasis on privacy and user trust.

At launch, Apple Pay is supported by Axis Bank’s Visa and Mastercard credit cards, giving millions of cardholders immediate access to the convenience of tap-to-pay transactions across compatible merchant terminals. Apple has confirmed that it will expand support to additional banks and merchants over time, signalling its ambition to establish Apple Pay as a mainstream payment option in India.

The introduction of Apple Pay comes at a pivotal moment for India’s payments ecosystem, which has witnessed rapid adoption of digital wallets, UPI transactions, and contactless card usage. Apple’s entry is expected to intensify competition among global and domestic players while offering consumers a premium, secure alternative for everyday transactions.

Industry observers note that Apple’s strategy of combining hardware, software, and financial services could reshape consumer behaviour in India, particularly among urban and tech-savvy demographics. As Apple deepens its partnerships with banks and merchants, Apple Pay may well become a cornerstone of India’s evolving digital economy.
