DEREK & ERIC TURN DESSERT CHAOS INTO BRAND IDENTITY

London studio Derek&Eric has crafted a vibrant identity for The Glorious Mess, a new dessert brand from Flower & White. Inspired by the folklore of Eton Mess, the design embraces chaos with expressive typography, hand-drawn fruit illustrations and narrative packaging that celebrates spilt meringue moments in bold, playful style.

Few puddings are as quintessentially British as Eton Mess, yet its origins remain delightfully contested. Some say it was born from a cricket match mishap at Eton College, others insist an overexcited Labrador toppled a picnic. Rather than choosing one tale, London design studio Derek&Eric has embraced the very chaos at the heart of the dessert to create The Glorious Mess, a new brand launched by meringue producer Flower & White.

The studio’s approach was to celebrate imperfection, turning the spilt meringue moment into a central motif for the brand world. This philosophy translates into a flexible visual system that runs across packaging, iconography and copywriting. Expressive typography leads the design, paired with hand-drawn fruit illustrations and dynamic product photography that deliberately avoids the overly styled polish typical of dessert branding.

Each box of The Glorious Mess carries its own narrative copy, recounting playful stories such as “The Labrador’s Tale” and reminding consumers not to “cry over spilt meringue.” These textual elements reinforce the brand’s commitment to storytelling, ensuring that every purchase feels like a continuation of the folklore surrounding Eton Mess.

Visually, the packaging achieves high contrast through bold pastel and primary colour blocks, against which strawberries, raspberries, lemons and passion fruit illustrations burst with energy. The result is a striking shelf presence that feels both contemporary and rooted in tradition. By leaning into the dessert’s chaotic heritage, Derek&Eric has avoided the trap of sterile uniformity, instead creating a brand identity that thrives on spontaneity and humour.

For Flower & White, the collaboration represents a bold step into narrative-driven branding. The Glorious Mess is not simply a product but a celebration of British dessert culture, one that invites consumers to embrace imperfection and enjoy the joy of accidental collisions. In a market often dominated by sleek minimalism or overly polished imagery, this brand stands out by championing the messy, the playful and the authentic.

The Glorious Mess demonstrates how design can elevate folklore into a modern brand world, transforming tales of crushed meringue into a vibrant identity that resonates with today’s consumers. Derek&Eric’s work ensures that the chaos of Eton Mess is not tidied away but proudly displayed, turning dessert folklore into a compelling visual and cultural statement.
