Flipkart’s Big Billion Days campaign, ‘Are You Really Gen Z?,’ created with McCann India, playfully gatekeeps fashion and beauty trends for true Gen Zs. Using humour, cringe moments and Gen Z-inspired CAPTCHAs, the campaign challenges cultural copycats while offering exclusive deals, amplifying Flipkart’s positioning as a youth-first shopping destination.
Flipkart has unveiled a bold new campaign for its flagship Big Billion Days shopping festival, asking a provocative question: “Are You Really Gen Z?” Conceptualised by McCann India, the initiative turns access to Flipkart’s latest fashion and beauty trends into a cultural litmus test, ensuring only those who genuinely embody Gen Z sensibilities can unlock the most coveted deals.
The campaign is rooted in a sharp cultural insight: Gen Z often cringes when their language, memes and digital cues are appropriated by older generations or brands trying too hard to appear relatable. Words like “rizz,” “cooked” and “no cap” have been liberally borrowed by marketers, but for Gen Z, the overuse of their slang dilutes its authenticity. Flipkart’s campaign cleverly flips this trope, recognising the frustration and transforming it into the creative core of the idea.
The film at the heart of the campaign depicts everyday scenarios where people awkwardly shoehorn Gen Z slang into conversations or business pitches. The reactions of the Gen Z characters caught in these moments are telling—pure cringe. This humorous portrayal underscores the generational divide and sets the stage for Flipkart’s playful gatekeeping.
At the centre of the experience is AreYouReallyGenZ.com, a microsite designed to test cultural fluency. Borrowing from familiar CAPTCHA formats, the site challenges users to prove their Gen Z credentials through quizzes on fashion, beauty and internet behaviour. Only those who successfully clear all three stages gain access to exclusive Big Billion Days offers curated for Gen Z.
Gagandeep Bindra and Rahul Arcot, Group Creative Directors at McCann India, explained the thinking behind the campaign: “In a world where everyone’s trying to talk, dress and breathe like Gen Z, we wanted to give the actual Gen Zs something only they can experience. So we built AreYouReallyGenZ.com, a place with curated, flex-worthy pieces from fashion and beauty. Protected by some seriously tough Gen Z-inspired CAPTCHAs. Would it be enough to keep Gen Z copycats out? We took the test, it did.”
The campaign is being amplified across digital channels and social media, ensuring maximum resonance with its target audience. By combining humour, cultural insight and interactive engagement, Flipkart has positioned itself as a brand that not only understands Gen Z but also protects their cultural space from dilution.
Running through the Big Billion Days sale period starting 9 October 2026, the campaign underscores Flipkart’s ambition to remain the go-to destination for India’s youth. In doing so, it highlights a broader trend in marketing: the shift from brands merely mimicking youth culture to actively curating and safeguarding it. For Gen Z, the message is clear—Flipkart is not just selling fashion and beauty, it is defending their identity.
